Author: TerryWillis124 Surnames: Classification: military Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.guernsey/4438/mb.ashx Message Board Post: To properly equip for the future the Soldiers' Monument, which is to commemorate the gallant deeds of the soldiers of Guernsey County, two air tight tins boxes containing copies of the weekly and daily papers of Cambridge, photographs, business and calling cards, and a number of other articles, which, should the time ever come when the marble shaft is taken down or destroyed, will make priceless relics or souvenirs, were placed beneath the shaft, one Friday afternoon and the other next morning. In the box placed there yesterday were the following articles: Copies of the Daily and Weekly Times, Daily Sun, Republican Press, weekly and daily Jeffersonian, Cambridge Herald, photo, of David D. Taylor, cards of S.M. Burgess, Fred Duff, Charles Bonnell, W.O. Burgess and John B. Stewart, the American Flag, the rosters of the Masonic Lodge, the I.O.O.F., the K. of P. and B.P.O.E., a dozen lead pencils to be distributed when the box is opened as souvenirs. In the box placed Friday morning were the following: A letter from Hon. Milton Turner, address to John Jones and to be opened 2000 years from date, a monumental certificate made out in the name of James Turner, a brother of Milton Turner, who belong to Co. H., 78th O.V.I., who was killed at Atlanta, Ga., July 22, 1864, and buried in an unmarked grave, the roster and diary of the 78th regiment, a letter head of the contractors of the monument, a letter head of the Smith Granite Co., builders of the monument, the signature of E. C. Brown, of Westerly R.D. 1, who is erecting the monument, a piece of tin from the first sheet of tin made by the Morton Tin Mill Co., a piece or iron from the sheet made by the Cambridge Iron and Sheet Mill by John D. Stewart, the card of Senator John H. Morgan, a copy of the Republican Press, card of C.J. Bonnell, a card of Hon. Milton Turner and a copy of the Daily Times. All readers of the Jeffersonian should keep a copy of the paper issued of 23d to refer to when the articles mentioned above are brought to light. It may be interesting, and then all may know that the articles mentioned were really in the boxes. The boxes were made by S.M. Burgess and present to the Association. The are air tight, 1x61/2 and 20 inches long. Thursday 4 June 1903 Cambridge Jeffersonian Cambridge Ohio. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She was a daughter of Henry Beymer and Elizabeth McMullen Beymer, who were pioneer setters at Washington this county, and was born in Washington August 21st, 1812, and was married at the same place April 12, 1831 by Peter Umstot, Esq.; to Bateman Webster, of Somerset County, Penn. After their marriage they made Norwich, Muskingum County, their home for many years. Bateman Webster was a soldier. They both became members of the M. E. Church and their home became a stopping place for the Methodist itinerants of that early day. They removed to Cambridge in 1862 and united by certificate with the church in April during the pastorate of Rev. W.B. Watkins. Bateman Webster died April 19, 1873. He built and resided in the house which was removed to give place to the Colonial block. Since his death the widow resided on North Sixth street. They were childless. Sister Webster, although having but little education was naturally a very intelligent woman, and a well worn family Bible attest her study of the word of life. She had many strange characteristics, and much disposed to fault finding, especially with the younger class, and as she grew older was disposed to think that the boys and girls that passed her residence, were purposely annoying her. But with her "after life's fitful fever she rest well." She was the youngest daughter of her father's family. Her father died at the age of 90 years. Of the family all are deceased except a brother, Noah Beymer, of Washington. Interment in the South Cemetery, funeral conducted by Dr. R.B. Pope, Wednesday at 4 o'clock from the M.E. Church. The obits are great to read, as they give real sense of the time. But, you have to wonder if the wording of this one aroused any comment. Perhaps the editor was on vacation when the phrase, "scurrilously honest", was applied to Mr Hare. ?You suppose he meant "scrupulously honest"....? Cheers, Elizabeth

My great uncles Price Worthing and Thomas Worthing were in Co B in that regiment. I have the book, Pioneer Cemeteries of Guernsey County (1963) and figured the stone might have been clearer then. There is a listing in the Forney Cemetery for a Kennon O. Worthing, no birth date given, died in 1897. Might the stone have eroded so that the nine now looks like a zero? I haven' been to that cemetery for probably 10 years or more, but I seem to remember that a lot of the stones were hard to read then. Hare, of Quaker City, died Tuesday, June 3, 1902. He had been in ill health for some time past and was taken to Columbus and put in the care of eminent specialists, who upon surgical investigation discovered a cancerous condition of the liver. He very much desired to return home to see his children before death and on Tuesday accompanied by Mrs. Hare and Dr. G.W. Jones started homeward. He grew suddenly worse as they came on the train and soon after noon, when between Newark and Zanesville, he died. Mr. hare was a son, of Rev. John Hare, a pioneer M. E. preacher who resided in Summerfield, where Mr. Hare was born. His father died leaving a widow and a large family of children of which J. W. Hare was one of the youngest. He grew to manhood in and near Summerfield, where he married and soon after went into business at Spencer's Station, afterwards in Quaker City. When a boy he made his home for some years with Mr. and Mrs. G. Trott, who having no children of their own, assisted young Hare, whom they loved as their own child, to start in business. In all his dealings he was the soul of honor and held the confidence of all his customers to a remarkable degree. He was scurrilously honest and always courteous, Christian gentlemen, a member of the M.E. Church for many years. The family consists of his wife, Miss Grace, who is deputy probate clerk in the office of Hon. W. H. Gregg, John, Nellie and George, who are left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father.
