I have been trying to find an obit or other information on Mary Campbell Stewart, born about 1830 in PA (probably Fayette or Westmoreland County) to Robert and Jemima Campbell. She moved to Guernsey County, OH about 1840 with her mother and new step-father James Redburn. Mary married Hugh Stewart around 1847 Guernsey County, Ohio. Her brother Robert Campbell lived in Cambridge so Mary and Hugh may have as well. ANY LEADS APPRECIATED. Ancestry.com research has produced nothing. Thanks so much! My great-grandmother was Eliza A. Boyd Hughes of Antrim, OH. According to the 1860 Census Eliza was 18 and had a brother named Albert, age 8. She was living with her widowed mother Sarah Boyd who appears to have been married to a Jonathan Boyd. I only mention this because I've gone through a similar frustrating search because my grandparents divorced around the same time as yours. I never knew my grandfather -- my father barely knew him -- and no one ever spoke of him because he "abandoned" the family. Who knows the truth? At any rate, by luck I found a distant cousin I didn't know I had who connected me with his aunt, a niece of my grandfather. It seems my grandfather had lived the last decade or so with their family and none of them ever knew that he had been married or had three children. So keep plugging away; don't give up. You never know when some wild stab in the dark may turn up a connection. There were several Boyd families in Guernsey County at the time (including that of Hopalong Cassidy fame), most of them more noted than Eliza A. She married Joseph Hughes, my great-grandfather. King got involved with the local pharmacist's only daughter and got her pregnant. He did wish to marry her, but her father adamantly refused probably because Andrew had 6 small children under the age of 12. I believe that this precipitated his move to Kansas either by his choice, community, or family pressure. The young woman had a baby daughter and she continued to live at home with her parents. My mother found out about this from Aunt Rosie on one of our last visits to see her before she died. My grandmother NEVER mentioned this to anyone that we are aware of and since my grandmother was a real stickler for propriety my guess is that this was a real family scandal and she was quite ashamed of her father's actions. Children in those days were often judged harshly by their parent's reputations and my grandmother who was only 7 when her mother died surely felt this stigma gr! owing up as a "poor relation" as she put it. His version of the story (told to my uncle when he was a child) was that he went to his first battle and was disgusted to be fighting his fellow Americans, so he threw down his rifle and walked home to Ohio. I believe that he and was only 17 years old and got scared in his first battle, so he deserted. He had joined with his older brother.
