Dear list, I've seen postings yesterday/today regarding whether or not Guernsey County maintained marriage license records. I don't know. ...But....let me throw this into the mix for consideration. I'm not sure if Guernsey County has kept records of marriage licenses. They certainly have records of marriage dating back to the formation of the county. There is a difference between marriage licenses and marriage records. Marriage licenses were issued in some places, but appearantly, not all, and not consistently even where they were issued. And, not all marriage licenses which were issued were acted upon. .......e.g., John and Jane could obtain a marriage "license", then have a quarrel, and not actually get married. Their mariage license was recorded, ...but that doesn't mean they actually got married. So,....now, as genealogists, we have be be careful when looking at marriage licenses. Just because they got a marriage license, doesn't (in all cases) mean they followed through with it. (...This is probably only a small percentage of the cases that didn't follow through with the deed, ...but I think it's prudent to keep that in mind.) Concentrate on finding the marriage record. That sealed the deed. McCracken family of Cambridge descendant, Andy Miller, Columbus, Ohio

Names of married couples have been recorded in Guernsey County since at least its formation in 1810 (and nothing else besides the date). Ages didn't follow until many years later (1851?). A sporadic set of records for Guernsey County can be found at <http://www.usgennet.org/usa/oh/county/guernsey/vitals.html>. Otherwise, the records are available in the county courthouse in Cambridge, and may be available at LDS centers. Looking for information on Rosanna Barnes b.1830 in Washington Co. PA, Jacob Barnes b. 1819 I believe in Virginia, and Francis Barnes b.1827 I think born in Virginia also. Have much information on the Stiles side of the family, but really lacking on the Barnes side. Would love to share information.

I stumbled across the neatest internet site!! It is a site by the Bureau Of Land Management - General Land Office Records . You can search the site for land records (like the ones they have on Ancestry.com), but what is really great is that on most of them you can see an image of the original record. It is well worth the visit! I have been copying pictures from it for the last two hours! So here is the link. You just put in the state and name and Wahlah! <A HREF="http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/search.asp">BLM - ES, GLO Records - Search Land Patents</A> URL: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/search.asp Dawnee Phay McCulley
Posted on: Guernsey Co. OH Queries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Guernsey?read=1058 Surname: OSBORNE, O'BIERNE, MCITYRE ------------------------- Thomas E. OSBORNE and wife, Elizabeth MC ITYRE (MCATEER?) had a son, James Patrick OSBORNE, born in Cambridge, Guernsey County, 13 July, 1894. Elizabeth OSBORNE died about 1902, when James was eight years old. He lived with his grandparents on the outskirts of Cambridge until 1910 when he and his father moved to Wheeling, W. Virginia. James was my father but there seem to be no records about his early life in Cambridge although I have done extensive research. I am told that the earlier generations spelled the name O'BEIRNE. James died in 1953 in Seattle, Washington. Does anyone have any information about this family?
