I have a William DILLON off the edge of my family tree in Guernsey County. He married Margaret BORTON and they had a daughter named Phebe (b. 1810, OH), who married Archibald CRANSTON (my 4-great granduncle) on 8 JAN 1827 in Guernsey Co. Their third son was named William Dillon CRANSTON, in almost perfect Scots-Irish tradition. I'm told that Phebe had a brother named James, but don't know anything else about the family. It's possible that James or another brother might be the father of the Joshua and/or David DILLON mentioned above. On a related note, Archibald CRANSTON's older brother James and his family went to Iowa in the early 1850s. For a while they were located in DeWitt, Scott Co., just across the river from Rock Island, so this seems to be a common migration. 3. Posted on: Guernsey Co. OH Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Guernsey/1100 Surname: DAWSON ------------------------- Thank you but I already checked into the book you mention. No Jasper or Thorton Dawson mentioned in book, the Dawson lines are earlier and pretty much cut off where my Dawsons have been traced back to. Till I can find who Jasper Dawson's parents were I cannot find his link to the Maryland Dawson lineages since there were so many in Maryland in the 1700's-1800's. I guess only thing left to do is rent all the counties of Maryland census records for 1850 and hope Jasper was still living with his parents there before he came to Iowa in 1860 or right before. I already contacted the State of Iowa Genealogy society and they could not help me out either in finding the parents of Jasper Dawson. His death certificate only states MARYLAND as place of birth. Jasper only mentions that his mother was born in Kentucky but did not fill in where his father was born in the census records in Iowa in 1890. Anyone who may run across a will with children names listed in it from a Dawson who might have been from Maryland please drop me an email or if you know of any other Dawsons in Iowa who may have been connected to Maryland previously please email me. Thank you. Patti Vahary

Derivative citizenship for women and minor children was practiced until at least 1922. Beginning then adult women had to petition for naturalization separately. I assume that derivative citizenship continued for minor children after that time, but I'm not positive. I assume the age of majority was 21 at that time. However: do you know if they petitioned for naturalization before the child reached adult status? If not, they must petition separately. Thomas Cranston was sixteen years old when he arrived in the U.S. in 1802 with his father John. They waited until 1812 to petition for naturalization together (in Guernsey County Court of Common Pleas). The only concession to Thomas' minor status on arrival that I can see is that only John was required to take the oath of abjuration: 18 AUG 1812 Thomas Cranston and John Cranston Natives of Ireland filed in Court their petitions setting forth that it is bona fide their intention to become Citizens of the United States. John Cranston took the oath of Abjuration agreeably to Law. John's son John, born 1799/1800, would have received derivative citizenship from his father. I am researching Jasper Dawson who is my great great Grandfather and I am trying to connect the other Dawson living in the area of Jasper in Iowa at time of his death hoping that some of his family was living around there after leaving Maryland. Jasper Dawson was born in Maryland and on one census record in Iowa mentions that his mother was born in Kentucky but did not know where his father was born. Jasper claims to have been born in Maryland in the 1830s and sometime about 1860 he pops up alone in Iowa in Iowa City and entered into the Civil War in the 2nd Iowa Cavalry.
