    1. Re: [OHGUERNS] Fwd: Trip to Guernsey County
    2. Thanks but have already been there and did the court house and the genealogy library located in the main library. Unfortunately the people I was chasing just passed through. Bought some land and sold it and gone, but at least I got the deeds so well worth the trip. Ladies at the genealogy library as well as the court house were very helpful and very nice. I don't know why I keep hearing that court house employees are rude. I am now through my 6th court house in this part of the state and they have been either great or just helpful, but never rude. They are very busy and I sure do appreciate their taking the time to make my copies. I know what I am looking for and if someone just guides me to the oldest indexes I am ready to do. 3. You probably already have your answer, but I have the address for the Genealogical Society. It is just off of I-70 and just off of Rt. 209. If you turn at Bob Evans to the right, coming from Cambridge onto Georgetown Rd, you will find it on the right hand side of the road. The society is on the same property as Nicolozakes Company. You will see heavy equipment located on the lot. It might be two or three tenth of a mile out that road. Good luck. Betty of Guernsey CO. OH Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Guernsey/1237 Surname: BEVARD, DUNCAN, ABEL ------------------------- Hi, glad to hear from you. I show Mary Ann BEVARD married to a John DUNCAN. This might be wrong or this might be a first husband, or something. But that is all that I have on her. No one has been able to get information on the Bevard's that came from Ireland yet. Several people report about the same story in that 6 brothers came over to American from the coal mines of Dublin in the mid to late 1700's and most settled in Penn. or Maryland. We can find several Bevard's in the region during this time frame but cannot find the relationship. We do think that they originally came from Dougel Co., Ireland and before that, from France, but it is next to impossible to trace the line since they were protestants in a catholic area. I would be interested in the decendency of Mary Ann for my records though. Thanks, Larry

Oh Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/GuernseyObits/83 Surname: Gillespie, Cook or Cooke, Heade, Borrows, Moore, McCormick ------------------------- Newspaper obituary: The Daily Jeffersonian, 30 Sep 1925 W. J. GILLESPIE PASSED AWAY Prominent Cambridge Merchant Died in Tucson, Ariz., Tuesday Night William J. Gillespie, aged 56 years died in St. Mary's hospital,at Tucson Arizona,Tuesday night,at 9 0'clock,following an acute attack of asthma, according to a telegram received here from Dr. Purcell, of the hospital. The body will be brought to Cambridge, but until its arrival here, funeral arrangements cannot be completed. Word of the death of Mr. Gillespie came as a great shock, not only to the relatives, but also to his associates and many friends. The deceased was well known not only in Cambridge and Guernsey county, but throughout this section of the state, because of his extensive business interests and the active part he has taken in the advancement and development of every movement for the betterment of his home city and county. William J. Gillespie was born near McCleary's Mills in Jefferson township, July 17, 1869, where he grew to young manhood. About 31 years ago he moved to Cambridge and later with his brother-in-law, S. J. McCulley, opened the Gillespie & McCulley furniture store, and since the opening the store has been located in the same building. From the opening of the store the new firm was successful and in a few years was know as one of the leading furniture establishments in Guernsey county. About seven years ago Mr. McCulley retired from the active management of the store, but retained his interest in the company, the name of which at that time was changed to Gillespie-McCulley Furniture Co. For some time Mr. Gillespie had been in poor health, but continued in charge of the business of the firm until compelled to seek relief because of failing health. He visited a number of health resorts and received treatment. About two weeks ago Mr. Gillespie, accompanied by Mr. McCulley, left for St. Mary's hospital in Tucson, Arizona, spending three or four days in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mr. McCulley remained with his broth-in-law for about one week, before leaving for Cambridge, arriving here last Saturday. missing------had been a member of the U. P. church, taking a very active interest in all departments of the church and Sunday school, and on moving to Cambridge continued his membership in the First U. P. church. At one time he served as superintendent of the Sunday school. In civic affairs Mr. Gillespie was interested in all movements having for their purpose the advancement of his home city and county. He was a member of the Cambridge Rotary club, and during its existence, the Cambridge Commercial club. Mr. Gillespie was vice president of the Guernsey National Bank, having served as a member of the board of directors for a number of years. In addition to the widow Mr. Gillespie is survived by one sister, Mrs. A. L. Moore, of Columbus, and one brother, George Gillespie, of Cambridge. Three sisters and one brother are deceased. The asthmatic attack causing the death of Mr. Gillespie developed suddenly Tuesday night. During the evening he dispatched a night telegraph letter addressed to Mrs. Gillespie, stating that he was slightly improved. The telegram was as follows: "Have sent you a letter every day for seven days. I am able to live here without gettin worse and have cut the treatment in two, which indicates I will slowly improve." At the same time this telegram was received a second telegram reached here as follows: "Mr. Gillespie passed away at 9 p. m. Severe asthmatic attack. Death was very sudden. Dr. Purcell." Both telegrams were dated September 29th.

A death record, which should be available somewhere, would likely have the exact date of birth. This does require knowledge and veracity on the part of the death reporter, though. You can also look in the 1860 (or later) census. It should give you her name and age, which reduces the year of birth to a choice of two (date of census - age, or the previous year).

It looks as if they had all their children in PA. At the time of his death in 1808 Mifflin,Allegheny Co.,PA, he had property in BeaverTown and on waters of Slippery Rock Creek. This was in his will. Also in his will was that his 2 youngest children Leah and James were to be bound out. This was carried out through the Orphan's Court in 1810. Joseph and Sarah had the following children: Rebecca (m.Lt.John McMillan) Alexander (m.Matilda Sigman/Sickman) Isaac (m.Jane Reed) Margaret (m. Luke Sigman) James W.(m1. His daughter Matilda Arbuckle Locker was married in Washington Co.,OH and lived in Parkersburg WV area until she was killed by her husband. It is believed that she had 2 daughters. Joseph's wife Sarah d.1834 went to Guernsey Co.,OH along with some of children, others remained in PA or went west. Rebecca d.1852 and Lt. John McMillan d. 1857 both buried in Salem Cemetary. I believe this Joseph to be part of the family from Accomack, possibly one of the eldest sons who went to PA. I would love and welcome any and all info regarding any of these family members, and especially parents and sibs of Joseph, or maiden name of Sarah. Arbuckle Trivia: Joseph was under name Arbunkle under Maryland Muster Rolls in Rev War and in Accomack, VA. Affiliation in Accomack was Episcopalian, probably became Presbyterian or Methodist. Had 13 chldren, can supply names of 9. Lawyer on his will was Samuel Arbuckle, William Wilson was executor. Wife listed as Sarah (no maiden name found) had possible first wife named Priscilla. Had property 1 lott in Beavertown and 1/2 lott on waters of Slippery Rock Creek. I am from son Alexander. Allied names include Davis, Fletcher, Orr, Rolston, Martin, Harper, McMillan, Moore/Moor, Freeman Sickman/Sigman, Booth/Boothe, Borte/Bartin/Barton, Beyers/Byers, Williams, Reed, Henry, Torrence, Norfolk, Arthur and John Findley Esq. I believe this family may be from VA or W.Va. and have a suggested clue that it might be Russell Co. VA I believe the female named Priscilla Hunt to be the mother of my GGrandfather, James Basil Hunt b 20 Sep 1844 in Lamar Co, TX, whose father died before the 1850 census and Priscilla remarried to John A. Parsons and that family is listed in the 1850 Hunt Co. TX census. James Basil Hunt had 2 sister born VA, county unkn Priscilla Hunt was born VA, county unkn, about 1802-1805 according to the Hunt Co.
