    3. Posted on: Guernsey Co. OH Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Guernsey/1273 Surname: SHIPLEY, MATHEWS, HEIDE ------------------------- Cousin Paul WATKINS directed me here as per his #1 response. I have extensive SHIPLEY data in my PAF data base - regretably I do not have that up in this computer. I do have a copy of a "Census Detail Consolidation" I made back in '95. I have the census for what starts as the Ezekiel SHIPLEY family in Londenderry Twsp. from 1820 thru 1850. Family members listed are Ezekiel, Elizabeth (MATHEWS) w of Ezekiel, Lewis, Elizabeth (CARY)w of Lewis, Highly, Reason, Ann, Rehuny, Delila, Mary, Jacob, Eliza Jane, Otho, Lydia. Then in 1840 Reason is enumerated as HofH with wife Isabel (MILLIGAN) and d June E. I have Jacob starting in the 1860 census with w Catharine (HEIDE) (Spelling from marriage record I believe), and ds Mary Elizabeth b 1844 and Margaret b 1846. An interesting footnote to this family is that Highly SHIPLEY (b abt 1810)had two children without benefit of marriage; Otho (b abt 1841) and Lydia (b abt 1848). Otho was a Captain in the Union Army whereas all other SHIPLEYs served in the lower ranks. I have a little bit of info on her but would LOVE to get more detail on this interesting happening. It is my belief that Amon (aka Hammon) SHIPLEY is the father of both Daniel SHIPLEY (b Abt 1783), both first enumerated in Guernsey Co starting with the 1820 census and said Ezekiel SHIPLEY. A number of SHIPLEYs are enumerated in the 1820 census in various eastern counties of OH, Most can trace migrational roots from MD (most probably descendants of Adam SHIPLEY, the progenitor of the MD SHIPLEYs) then from PA, namely Fayette Co. I was a little hasty in putting this in but thought I would get someting posted that may be of interest to others.

Correct title of the book is: Stories of Guernsey County, Ohio History of an Average Ohio County by William G. Wolfe Superintendent of the Guernsey County Schools 1914-1935 Published by the Author Cambridge, Ohio 1943 page 819 (chapter on Jackson Township) "When Benjamin Wiers came from Harrison county, Virginia, in 1818, he found but twelve houses in what is now Jackson Township ... Other pioneer family names are Burt, Hoopman, Gorsuch, Williams, Peters, Rogers, Frye, Meek, Seins, Grant, Dickerson, Linkhorn, Conner and McCluskey. Some of these arrived several years after the township had been organized." "Pioneer Cemeteries of Guernsey County, Ohio" by Connor and Goodpastor (1963) lists the following in Mount Zion Cemetery of Jackson Township. This is the first solid evidence that Ann Rankin who married Alexander McCormick in 1815 was not the only one in her family to move to Guernsey Co from Fayette Co, PA. My Ann is the sister of Thomas Rankin, the aunt of George.

I have contacted him regarding your query as he has a lot of SHIPLEY information from the early 1800's in Guernsey County in the Londonderry Township area. His predecessor is Ezekial SHIPLEY who married my Great Great Aunt Mary Ann WATKINS on 27 JUN 1844 in Guernsey County. Ezekial was a close neighbor to My GGF Thomas WATKINS. Among the twelve children including Mary Ann, is Jacob RANKIN WATKINS. I do not as yet know what the WATKINS RANKIN relationship is. Any help with this information will be greatly appreciated.

The respondents are talking about an 1895 "Portrait and Biographical Record ..." Wolfe's book was published in the early 1940s. There is a copy in the New England Historic Genealogical Society library in Boston, near me. I'll try to get down there in the next week or so and check it.

My father-in-law rented a microfilm copy of 1850, but he said it was too faint to pick up anything. Perhaps someone out there has a better copy? I have a little bit of the almost-unreadable 1830 census for Madison TWP. "Town of Winchester" is written in the lh margin flipped 90degrees to the other entries. The entries were clearly marked separately on the census returns, not added later, however I don't see any way of telling when the "Town of Winchester in said Township" title was added -- the handwriting seems similar, altho it's very hard to read. Isaac Bonnell is a resident of the town, so is Daniel?
