    3. In reply to Michael Helm, My Rankins were all farmers. I don't know why they came to Ohio, unless it was for the land and/or cheaper taxes. Around1810, I would imagine the land was cheaper than in PA. My Thomas Rankin came from Uniontown, Fayette County, PA. He was the oldest son of 11 children. I do not have any Rankins from VA. I also do not have any Helms. After growing up in Guernsey county, my direct Rankin ancestors then went to Tuscarawas County, OH (1850), and then to DeWitt County, IL(1860-70). From there, to Kansas(1880-1910). On every census, they had a new address. For farmers, they really moved a lot. I think it was all to get better and cheaper land, but that is only a guess. As far as I know, the two younger brothers stayed in Guernsey County. They were George Rankin who married Mary Shipley and John Huffman Rankin who married 3 times - (1) Phoebe Galloway; (2) Margaret Shipley (sister of Mary); and (3) Harriet Quillen. John eventually went to New Philadelphia, OH and is buried there. I found most of this information in the book on the History of Guernsey County, which I found at the genealogical library there. If you see any connection here, let me know. Dorothy ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 1. [OHGUERNS] 1832 Census for Guernsey County?
    2. Geoff Crimmins
    3. Posted on: Guernsey Co. OH Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Guernsey/1329 Surname: Warehime ------------------------- I am researching the Warehime family, and have found a Jacob Wareham in the IGI on Familysearch. The source of the IGI record is listed as the 1832 census of Beaver Twp, Guernsey, Ohio. It seems odd that there would have been any sort of census in 1832. Has anyone on the list heard of such a census, or know where I might find more information about this?

    2. Michael, I too am a Rankin connection. There are two school of thoughts, that Ann Rankin was the dtr of William of Uniontown PA, but I believe her to be the dtr of Hugh Rankin, Wm's brother. If you go to the rootsweb archives in Fayette Co. PA you will find lots of info on the Rankins of Uniontown, Fayette, PA. My Ann Rankin married Alexander Hamilton McCormick and moved the same year they were married, 1815, to Belmont Co. The decendants of this couple are found in Guernsey Co. I have no Helm's in my database. Marilyn McCormick Murphy In a message dated 11/25/00 9:59:00 PM Central Standard Time, helm@fionn.es.net writes: > Since you have the probate record, can you tell me if there is any > mention of Thomas Rankin's estate? He died 2-June-1841. His estate may I have the 1826-1839 film of the administrator's docket. THere're no Rankins in there. The date of the inventory probably falls in the gap that I mentioned; anyway , there are no Rankin inventories in the 1826-46 inventory film. I may have the 1840-? Administrator's docket as well ; haven't looked at that as had no interests there. I will look the next time I have a chance, perhaps Wednesday or Thursday. Please tell me more about the Rankins in Guernsey Co. The Helm family has Rankin connections, but these are back in VA (and this Rankin connection may have come from PA before this, but not sure if this is documented). Why the Helm family chose to come to Guernsey Co in the 1820's is a mystery, but it may make more sense if relatives or members of their community also migrated to Ohio. >>

    3. To Michael Helm, I do not have an answer to your problem, unless you try the County Courthouse in Cambridge. I have called the courthouse several times, and they have always been very helpful. However, I was wondering if you would do me a favor. Since you have the probate record, can you tell me if there is any mention of Thomas Rankin's estate? He died 2-June-1841. His estate may not have been settled until after 1842. Any help would truly be appreciated. 3. We have been posting notes on the Campbells of Guernsey Ohio. The first generation that we have is Robert(1771-1842)and Jane(1773-1848) Campbell. They are said to have been born and married in Antrim County, Ulster, Northern Ireland. But researchers have not found any trace of them until they arrive in Londonderry Township, Guernsey County, Ohio about 1801. The second generation includes a John Campbell (1795-1872) who married Mary Sleeth. They lived and died near Robert's farm. Lois Guffy wrote: >>>By chance would your Campbell line list a Mary Ann Campbell born circa 1933 in KY and lived near Perry Co OH ? I noticed the name Emma in your info. WILLIAM 1 CAMPBELL (ROBERT A) was born July 14, 1801, and he may be the William who died January 5, 1871 in Clinton County, Iowa. He married ANNE LAWRENCE. She was born March 3, 1798 in the 1850 census will list state, and died May 5, 1882 in Clinton County, Iowa. (this William has not been proven) Dates and most of the family information - courtesy of Rose Cranston. Emma Mellou Campbell, page 33, named William as a son without naming his wife and Emma named three of his children, William Taggart with the same date of birth as Rose's William Taggent Campbell (a good fit), Robert Hanna Campbell (Rose has Robert H.) , and Rebecca married to a Barrett. (As of November 22, 2000 I am not sure what this note means - seems to mean this info is speculative - clearly needs work.) Children of WILLIAM CAMPBELL and ANNE LAWRENCE are: i. MARGARET ELIZABETH2 CAMPBELL, b. April 28, 1824; d. August 24, 1893, Oldebolt, Iowa; m. JOHN B. CRANSTON, April 25, 1848, Gurnsey County. ii. JANE CAMPBELL, b. March 4, 1826; d. May 10, 1884; m. R.J. JAMISON. iii. SARAH ANN CAMPBELL, b. October 16, 1827; d. February 14, 1921; m. (1) JOHN BARRETT, May 19, 1852; m. (2) JAMES A. MAYES, September 9, 1865. iv. ROBERT HANNA CAMPBELL, b. November 21, 1829. v. LAWRENCE ALEXANDER CAMPBELL, b. November 11, 1831; d. November 28, 1921. vi. REBECCA CAMPBELL, b. Abt. 1832; m. BARRETT. vii. INFANT CAMPBELL, b. February 10, 1834. viii. CHILD CAMPBELL, b. January 14, 1835. ix. WILLIAM TAGGART CAMPBELL, b. July 21, 1836, near Antrim; d. April 10, 1912, at the home of his adopted daughter, R.W. Jamieson; m. (1) JENNIE LOGUE; m. (2) RACHEL BRATTON. Notes for WILLIAM TAGGART CAMPBELL: Station master at Dewitt Iowa. Minister in the Unite Presbyterian Church. Delegate to Pan-Presbyterian Councis in Scotland(or Irealnd). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We think Robert may havew arrived in New York 1801 - but this remains to be proven. Robert did have a son named William - he is named i n his will and a William was a witness in 1838 when Robeert F. Campbell purchased land in Gurnesey County. Emma , page 7, thought that the first Robert may have had a brother Alexander who lived nearby. He seems to have died in 1838 and tin 1935 there were papers in his estate settlement. That might be a lead for you and another William. Keep us in mind --- Regards Hal

Keep us in mind --- Regards Hal The administrator's docket has a James Campbell on p 137, which would be "early", maybe 1830's; the inventories & sales bills book has a Robert Campbell on p 570 -- that would be in the 1840's, perhaps 1845

    3. Emma Mellou Campbell, a great-granddaughter of Robert Campbell 1771-1842 and his wife Jane, dedicated a short family history to them. They lived in Londonderry Township, Guernsey County, Ohio. We are following a branch into Perry County, Ohio. Emma toured the Ohio cemeteries and went to Antrim Ireland. It was published in 1935. I would like to share this information with any interested persons. Years ago I mentioned this source and the only reply I got was a sort of giggle. If you are of this line this little known work would be of interest to you. I could scan this document and put it on county web page - I do not have a web page - or I could send it as text document to anyone able to download it - or I could convert it to a pdf file and do the above or snailmail it on an Iomega disk, but you would have to provide the disk - or I could burn it onto a CD and you could read it in any CD reader. In return I would require some new to me data about this family. However, if the Guernsey County Society wants it in one of the above forms I will make every effort to oblige. In other words almost anything but a paper copy. Regards Hal
