I don't know where to find a map on-line, but in the Guernsey County OH Common Pleas Court Records 1822-1824 Minute Book C, page 79, as posted to this list on 28 July 2000, comes this information: "March 1823 - On application to the court, a new township has been set off by the name of Liberty. " In the book, Portrait and Biographical Record of Guernsey County, Ohio", published 1895, page 524 states, "The Commissioners' journal does not show when Liberty Township was organized; but on April 8, 1819 it was ordered that the south row of sections in the third township and third range be stricken off Wheeling Township and attached to Cambridge (Twp.). The organization of Liberty (Twp) must have taken place some time between the date last named and the 3d (sic) of December, 1822, as on the latter date it was ordered that the south row of sections in the fourth township and third range be stricken from Wheeling (Twp) and attached to Liberty Township." In the same book, page 526 states, "Naphthali Luccock was the first Postmaster and also the first Justice of the Peace. The township of Liberty was orgainzed in 1820. The first teacher..." Possibilities explaining this apparent conflict of dates include: 1)The book may contain a typo in the date as I have identified other typos. 2)Another possibility could be the difference between when a township was erected (formed) and when it was organized (began functioning, e.g., operating). That info would be in a number of books, so maybe someone else can provide that. 3) Yet another possibility, and the one that appears to be most logical to me, is that the book's author erred when he suggested that Liberty Twp. was formed between 1819 and 1822. More likely is the scenario that the Commissioners authorized the formation of the township in December 1822 and the Court of Common Pleas recorded and authorized the new township to begin operating in March 1823. Good luck in your hunt! While I don't know what maps are on-line, I do know that there are 1855 and 1870 Atlases which show property owner information for Guernsey County. 1855 appears to be the earliest available. Liberty Twp is north of Cambridge in what (if I'm reading this right) appears to be in Range III, Township III of the US Military District. The only town which appears on my map (which, unfortunately, is not dated but probably 1870) is New Salem in Section 1. The town of Liberty appears to be just northwest in Wheeling Twp., Range III, Township IV. The State Auditor of Ohio has on-line the "Ohio Lands Book" which may be useful. The site is http://www.auditor.state.oh.us/ Tom Bay, Columbus, OH

There's a funny note in Wolfe about Madison TWP, where he says the township was once much larger (it's not 6 x 6 today, more like 5 x 5 mi). Does anyone know of a map that shows county geography in the early days or mid 19th century? What the section numbers would be in the various townships? Any advice appreciated.

There is such a forum: the USAGEN mailing list. I encourage everyone to use it for general information on genealogy and discussion of national genealogy resources. You will reach a much wider audience that way. OHGUERNS should remain devoted to Guernsey County-related genealogy. Hi All: Please pardon the intrusion, but, I was thinking that I wish there was a forum to share "genealogy research tips" that [you] wish you had known when you first started research. So, my Christmas gift to you all is to share the one thing that I wish I would have known twenty-odd years ago when I started research. Namely, when you copy down information from a census record, you should copy at least 6-8 families on either side of your ancestor. I read about this "tip" about three years ago. Now I always copy at least 8 families on either side because when you find more "surnames" in your family and go back and look at the census records, you sometimes find that they lived close to one another, sometimes next door. It is not unusual to find the "in-laws", parents or siblings close by. I wish that I had started that habit twenty years ago. Now, I have resorted to going back and looking at the same census records again to gain that info. So, does anyone want to share their most "invaluable" tip regarding genealogy? Thanks and Happy Holidays.
