I have not heard of Mary as a nickname for Phebe, but people with the name of Mary often go by their middle names because Mary is so common. Do the ages and birth locations for Mary/1850 and Phebe/1860 match? Also look in the 1870 and 1880 census, if possible, for corroborating information. Given the overlapping dates, they seem likely to be the same person. Does anyone have information about the Gant families living in Guernsey County Ohio in the 1840's and 1850's? In 1837, Richard Gant purchased land in Guernsey Co and was listed as living in Allegheny Co PA. He again purchased land in 1838 but was living in Guernsey Co OH according to BLM documents. He is listed in the 1840 census in Knox Twp, Guernsey Co. Also in Guernsey in 1840: Hamilton Gant, Millwood Twp. Jesse Gant, Millwood Twp. Joel Gant, Millwood Twp. William Gant, Beaver Twp. Marriages in Guernsey Co: Cloe Gant to William Young, 27 July 1818 Jesse Gant to Margaret Campbell, 20 Nov 1827 Margaret N. Gant to John R. Warden, 11 June 1846 Sarah E. Gant to John Moore, 27 Mar 1854 Levi Gant to Mary A. Topping, 8 Nov 1855 Oddly enough, with the exception of Margaret Gant Warden listed with husband John, there are no Gants in the 1850 census of Guernsey Co OH, nor can I find wills or cemetery records for them. Does anyone know where any of these people were in 1850? Thanks, Leah Rodis Rauenberg, Germany

I really could use some help. Someone from the Ohio mailing list suggested I check out this county. This is the first time I've researched in Ohio. I recently discovered that some of my ancestors were either born or married in Ohio. This is what I have: FELIX RANDALL was born about 1824, OH and died 1876, IN. He married Sophia Jones on 11 March 1850 in Clinton Co, IN Sophia was born 5 May 1828 in Ohio. Sophias parents were Samuel Jones of New Jersey and Sarah Ann Scott of Pennsylvania; they were married in Ohio I don't know who Felix's parents were. I'm hoping to track them down in Ohio. Any ideas? I'd also like to find out more about Sophia's parents. They were married in Ohio, sometime in the 1830s, is my guess. Again, any ideas? Thanks. Krista Connors James of Menomonie,WI

You won't find death certificates before about 1860 (sorry, I don't recall the exact date that they began recording them). Wills should be findable in the Will Book in the Guernsey County Courthouse in Cambridge. They have an index, in which I found wills for my ancestor John Cranston, dated 1823 (posted here: <http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/O/OH-FOOTSTEPS+1999+350913211821+F>. I don't know how much earlier they go, but this particular will was found on p. 85, and at that time you get about one will per page, so there may be about 80 wills preceding this one. That may well put it back to 1810, when Guernsey County was organized. Hi, I am compiling a book on Marylanders to Ohio Prior to 1820. If you would like to have any information included in this book you are welcome to. Please provide information about the ancestor from MD that moved to Ohio prior to or during the year 1820. Who they married and their childrens names and who they married that is all... Please provide sources.. Those sources may help me find more Marylanders that went to OH.. I am currently abstracting names from Hinshaw's Quaker Book Vol. 4 & 5 of Marylanders listed from Maryland from Minutes of the different Meetings from Maryland. And from the Maryland end abstracts of all Monthly Meeting Houses in Maryland of Marylanders requesting certificates of Removal to goto a OH Monthly Meeting. Also abstracts of Rev War Pensions of Marylanders to Ohio recieving pensions... Also information from the Pension Lists I have been working hard on this project for 2 years and hope to get it completed soon. Again if you would like to include information on your Maryland ancestor that migrated to Ohio prior to 1820 you are welcome to e-mail me privately at wsmithso@erols.com and please include your name, mailing address and e-mail address in your message. Sincerely, Christopher T. Smithson Maryland Genealogist 4219 Paddrick Road Darlington, MD 21034-1034 (410) 836-3433 wsmithso@erols.com http://www.genealogypro.com/csmithson.html
The earliest estate records that I know about start in the 1820's. There are 2 books. The administrator's docket has cases in 1829. The inventories/will book has inventories from 1826. These books were at one time owned by the Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas, & probably still are (today, by the probate division). They may have been turned over to the county genealogical society. You can get film of them from the LDS FHC libraries. There may be other records that I don't know about (I would like to hear about other possibilities). I don't know what the situation is for earlier records. If I were you I would study the history of that period carefully & try to identify towns or areas that were fairly advanced then & also look there (for example, Marietta).
