OH Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Guernsey/1398 Surname: BANKER, STEPHENSON, STEVENSON, STEVISON ------------------------- Apparently Julia Ann Banker and Lewis J. Stephenson had at least three children - Martha, b.1843; Mary, b.1845; Sophia, b.1847. Julia died 14 August 1850. Her three children appear in the 1850 census of Guernsey Co., OH, living in Wheeling Twp. with their grandparents, Jacob & Mary Banker. I think Lewis Stephenson remarried, but I have not been able to locate a record for his second marriage. In the 1860 census for Franklin Twp., Jackson Co., OH, Lewis J. Stevison (Stephenson) is listed with his wife Mary A. and children Martha A., age 17, Mary E., age 15, Sofia J., age 13, Morris, age 6, Margaret, age 3, and Oha N. Perkins, age 15, laborer. I think this is the same Lewis Stephenson who was married to Julia Ann Banker but have not been able to document that. I need to find a record of the second marriage. Any help would be appreciated.

My information shows that she was born 18 Feb 1825, Ohio; married Lewis Stephenson, and died on 14 Aug 1850, all in Guernsey Co. I have one reference which says her children were raised by her parents after her death; they're listed in the 1850 but not the 1860 census with Jacob and Mary Banker of Wheeling Twp. I don't have any information on Lewis Stephenson/Stevenson but I do have lots on the Bankers as Julia's sister Amanda was my gg-gmother. A Sophia Stevenson married Lloyd Syphert in Coshocton Co., Ohio, on 13 June 1873.

Stevenson (Stephenson) (Stevison) and his family who lived in Guernsey county in the 1840's. According to information I have found, Lewis Stevenson married Julia Ann Banker on or about 15 Sept. 1840 in Guernsey county. They had children Martha A., b.1843, Mary E., b.1845 and Sophia J., b.1847. Apparently Julia Ann died and Lewis married Mary A. (--?--), also in Guernsey county. Sometime in the 1850's the family moved to Franklin Twp., Jackson Co., OH, where they were living at the time of the 1860 census. I am trying to locate confirmation on the two marriages of Lewis and any other information on this family. If you can help I would appreciate it. Thank you. Jim TeVogt

    2. Doug and Patti Ensor
    3. I believe information on this law can be found in the book, "Ohio Marriages Before 1820". Most early 19th century brides were married in their own township because of this and so if you can find the marriage record it is a good clue to look for the rest of the family. Grooms, of age, could get married anywhere. Many of his descendants lived in Cambridge and it is very possible that Emerson Campbell b. 1/30/1862 is among them. Unfortunately I have not been yet able to enter all the names in this book into an electronic data base and so I was not able to thoroughly search this source for Emerson, but I did not find him in a quick eyeball scan. 2. The FHC film is #1294392 It's item #2 Item #1 is the CoCP's Journal P, 1850-1852. Item #2 appears to be the Journal from about 1810 to the 1820's. Here it's called "the Record Book". The first item is an index, the second are several of the clerk's stylized signatures (I don't know what you call these things, but there's some word for it; the Chinese call their equivalent a "chop", if that helps). It looks like "C P Beatty". Then the first case is August term, 1810. The index which precedes the cases is fragmentary -- only the last few alphabetized pages seem to have survived/been filmed, so you'll have to look thru the whole book. Unlike some of the later journals, tho, it's quite legible. Sadly I didn't find any of the names various people posted, but I didn't have enough time to do this either. By the way, there is yet another resource for probate info for Guernsey Co. It's called "Index to Probate Files 1816-1942". It's FHC film #894963. It is an absolute nightmare, tho -- it 's partially alphabetized, but the letter-groups skip all over the book, backwards & forwards, there's no clear indication of when the various entries are made (that is, what date/year). I don't think there's a lot of information about the early period in there. But there may be some indexing useful for finding late 19th century information (not my period of interest, but I recognize a few names).
