    1. [OHGUERNS] Obituary of Mary Jane (SMITH) LINDSEY [1836OH1923IN]

    3. Posted on: Guernsey Co. Oh Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Oh/GuernseyObits/110 Surname: BAKER, CALLAND, CARTER, CRANE, LINDSEY ------------------------- THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, June 7, 1923, Volume XLVII, Number 30, Page 7, Column 4, “DEATH’S HARVEST. LINDSEY.” [Transcribed 6 Feb2001 from Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library’s IHS Microfilm Records.] Mary Jane SMITH was born April 12, 1836, near Byersville, Guernsey County, Ohio and died May 31, 1923, aged eighty-seven years, one month and nineteen days. She was married to Benjamin F. LINDSEY in 1856. To this union were born seven children—Martha, who died in infancy; Mrs. Lissa BAKER, of Solsberry; Mrs. Jessie MCLAUGHLIN, of Bloomfield; Mrs. Etta CALLAND, of California; Mrs. Lizzie CARTER, of Illinois; Mrs. Laura CRANE, of Solsberry, and James Edward, who was laid to rest one week ago today. She confessed her faith in her Savior in her early womanhood, and later joined the M. E. church at Solsberry. It is needless to say she was a Christian, for her life’s work speaks for itself. I can be truly said “she hath done what she could.” Her greatest enjoyment was to look after the welfare and happiness of her family. Her life was devoted to them. She had in raising her family, cared for and looked after the needs of motherless children and raised as adopted son, John W. WISENSTINE. In the fall of 1862, she with her husband and three little children, moved near Solsberrry, where she resided her remaining days. Her work on earth is done, but the good lessons she has taught, and her exemplary life, will live on to be cherished by her loved ones. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. E. E. ALDRICH, pastor of the M. E. church of Bloomfield, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John E. MCLAUGHLIN, and by Elder T. A. COX in the M. E. church at Newark on Friday, June 1, 1923, after which this mother in Israel was laid to rest beside her husband in the Newark Cemetery, “to wait till Jesus comes.” — We desire to express our thanks and appreciation of the kindness, sympathy and help shown us during the illness and after the death of our dear mother and grandmother, Mary Jane LINDSEY; also for the many beautiful flowers, and to each and every one who assisted in any way in our sad hour of bereavement. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. MCLAUGHLIN And Family. Mrs. Chelnissa BAKER, Mrs. Etta CALLAND Mrs. Elizabeth CARTER MRS. Laura CRANE. Link: [Link to the Obituary of her husband, Benjamin F. 2. I have both Johnson and Stiers/Stires in my line. My grgrgrandfather, Basil Chalfant married Lydia Stiers in Jan 1855. He married again in Nov of the same year, so I imagine Lydia died soon after their marriage. Do you have any information on this Lydia? They were married in Guernsey, I believe. Basil then went on to marry Lucinda Johnson in Nov. Her parents were Aloina/Alonia and Reuben Johnson. Alonia is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Quaker City. Could any of this be connected to you? I have more Johnson names. Please let me know if any of this sounds familiar. Judith

    3. "Bob Bisom" writes: > Does anyone know where to locate the church records for the Salt Fork Baptist Church? > I second that. There's a book published in the '70's -- really more of a pamphlet -- that has some interesting tidbits, but I'd really like to find the original material this booklet was based on. This book was written by Mrs Robert Connor & fiche can be found in the LDS/FHC library (look under Oxford TWP, not just Guernsey Co). I was given a copy of a slightly smaller version of the pamphlet that Connor apparently published in a magazine or newspaper by another poster; pretty much the same content. In my family's case, there's one additional "Helm" listing in the fiche version. These records provide the only known references to our family in the 1820's, so I'm very curious to see the whatever else exists, if nothing else, to get more of an idea about their community. 1. [OHGUERNS] Kells
    2. Hi - I'm new to this list and would like to post the names of the Kells family I'm trying to trace. ANDREW KELLS - born in Pennsylvania, moved to Guernsey Co. about 1810 or 1812. Married Mary Marshall 1809, supposedly in Guernsey Co. but since that wasn't a county until 1810 it could have been some other location. Andrew died in Guernsey County in 1858. JOSEPH MARSHALL - arrived in guernsey Co. the same time as Andrew Kells and is believed to be the Father of Mary Marshall. Andrew was a witness to the will of Joseph and land records show they were neighbors. ROBERT MARSHALL KELLS - older son of Andrew and Mary. He married LAVINA BAY in 1836 and they moved to Defiance Co. OH. RALPH KELLS - second child of Andrew and Mary. He married Ann Jane McCracken in 1841. MARIA JANE KELLS - third child of Andrew and Mary. Bown in 1815, but don't have a date. She married James Campbell Bay. The information about the marriage of Andrew and Mary Marshall came from a McCracken descendant, and I can find no proff of the marriage. The will of Andrew Kells names all three of the children, so I'm sure of that fact. He also mentioned his wife "Mary". There is a record of a marriage of Andrew Kells to Mary Shaw in 1843, and I think it is possible she was the second wife of "our" Andrew. A list of burials at Cumberland shows Andrew, Mary M. and Mary. I would appreciate any information regarding these marriages and this family. Even information on where to look further would be very helpful. Theda Kells Hoyt
