    1. RE: [OHGUERNS] GUERNSEY MARRIAGES

    3. My suggestion for using the LDS FamilySearch site is to separately search the Ancestral Files and the International Genealogical Index. While the former (along with the Pedigree Resource File) is work submitted by others, the majority of the IGI is made up of local/county records. If you wish to search only the IGI, it's best to enter a batch number. You can then search on surname only or, without a surname, you can get the entire database. For Guernsey County the marriage batch numbers are: M514321 (1810-1848) M514322 (1842-1861) M514323 (1861-1870) M514324 (1870-1885) Records within the above batches are from "Marriage records, 1810-1916; index to marriages, v. 1 Ohio. Probate Court (Guernsey County)" The batch number for births is C514326. Records are from "Birth records v. 1-3, 1867-1909, Guernsey County (Ohio). Probate Judge." However, FamilySearch doesn't have the full listing through 1909 - their records go through about 1872. From the main search page of FamilySearch, click on International Genealogical Index. Enter a surname (leave blank if you want the entire database), region (North America), and batch number. Click on Search. This will give you marriages or births in Guernsey County only for the surname you entered. If you'd like batch numbers for other areas, there is an IGI Batch Numbers Index available at Family History Centers. 3. I am having a problem locating my Grandma's people. If there is anyone out there that has the means to help me it would mean more than you know! She was born Myrtel May Wilson on Sept. 6, 1884. She was given away to a family named Charles and Martha Cox when she was very little around the age of 4. My Dad said she was born in Lima Ohio but they show no record for her birth so I was thinking that since she was given away in Anderson Ohio, maybe she was born there? We do know for sure that her mother was born in Ohio and so was she as well as her father was born in Indiana. We dont belive her father married her mother but if so, he left soon after as her mother gave her up because she was raising her on her own. Can anyone help? Ive tried all I know to do at this point and if by some grace of God someone else doesn't find her, then she is lost to history. Thank you for you time in reading this. ..Jeff Bright

    3. I'd like to add that Jerilyn's suggestion that you contact the county courthouse would be very important if you use familysearch.org. The information posted there is someone's work and it is only as accurate as the poster took the time to check - and not all people document their work. None of the submitter's sources are listed, so sometimes it is 92yearold great-uncle Sam's memory which may or may not be good. Or it may be a neighbor of your great-grandparents, or it may be a misinterpretation of a family bible's data. I have used familysearch.org several times for "brickwalls". About 50% of the time that it gives me new names, when I try to document the info, I find out that it is someone entirely unconnected to my family. The othertimes it has helped me immensely. So be sure you follow Jerilyn's advice, if you are new to searching via the internet, by followup with a search for documentation to support the data found. Or you may spread false data, or spend years looking up the wrong tree. 3. Two Questions --I found a number of family members in my 1820 census index CD who were suppose to be in Washington Twp., but are all listed in Monrow Twp. I understand Washington Twp. did not have any towns, so does anyone know if those in Washington were just counted with Monroe??? I know they didn't have a post office and mail came out of another twp. If so would this apply to tax records, voter registrations etc.?? I found my Jacob Smith along with John Reed, Levi Engle and William Bowers who were all related, but there was also a Henry Smith, Nathaniel Smith and William N. Smith. Jacob Smith had a grandson b. 1828 named William N., so hoping these Smith belong to mine! Can anyone claim them? Faith keahey@fiberpipe.net

    2. Hello all, During my excursion to Guernsey County, I found a deed for my ancestor that says the following: "to John McAndless, assignee of Robert Porter." I have checked every possible resource on my ancestor in order to find out who is parents were or where he came from, but I've had no luck, so I'm researching this Robert Porter in hopes that he will provide a clue. The deed is dated February 25, 1839 for land in Madison Twp. from the State of Ohio (grantor). I'd appreciate any information at all on Robert Porter. Thanks, Jessie McCandless

If you know the date and names then you can request it from them if you send a dollar and a very specific request to Guernsey County Courthouse P.O. Box 766 801 Wheeling Ave. Cambridge, OH 43725. If you don't know the specifics, then if you can get to the courthouse, I highly suggest doing so and going to the Probate office and they have an index in there where you can look up the records yourself. There are other books, & other films in their collection. Look thru their catalog. Some of the volumes are partially indexed, but in some cases the indices are pretty difficult to read. There are also unindexed ministers' licenses in some of the books (A, I believe). It would be a real community service if someone were to transcribe those indices. Probably someone already has done it for the genealogical society or the county clerk's office (but in manuscript form).

I have a Robert Ward who married a Marry "polly" Leeper from Gurnsey Co. who was the daughter of Samule Leeper and Margarete Clark This is the correspondance I have saved on this line: Its not a direct line...have more if you need it hope it gives you the clues you are looking for........... pmml@navicom.com Mary "Polly" Leeper. Married Robert Ward born 1773. In 1810 cencus of Washington Co. Pa lists five children drops from sight in 1813------------------------ One of my great aunts, Etta Adel Livingston, born 19 September 1870 married Howard Lee Ward, born in Wardton, Oregon (near Green south of Roseburg). He was the son of Frazer (Frazier?) and Mary Ann Flournoy Ward. She died in Portland, Oregon. The couple had one son, Ray Livingston Ward, born 25 August 1894 in the Flournoy Valley, Oregon (west of Roseburg and just south of Melrose) He married a woman named Weber. Frazier Ward and his wife moved to Portland in their latter years. Is this the family you mention? Robert L. Casebeer, casebeer@jeffnet.org ----------------------------------------- Per message of Feb. 10, 2001: >I just found where Mary Leeper married a Robert Ward. >any one know much about this connection????? > This is what I have on the Wards: >Mary "Polly" Leeper. Married Robert Ward born 1773. In 1810 cencus of >Washington Co. Pa lists five children drops from sight in 1813. I have the following information in my notes regarding Leeper/Ward: Per Mrs. Pat Ward Moser (Feb. 12, 1999), Mary (Polly) Leeper, daughter of Samuel and Margaret Clark Leeper, was born in 1784 in Washington Co., PA, and married Robert Ward (son of Thomas and Sarah Mays Ward of Washington Co., PA, born 1775). Robert Ward had at least two brothers Daniel and Phillip Ward. Pat Ward Moser is descended from Daniel Ward. Members of the Ward family settled in Carroll Co., Ohio.] Information on Samuel and Margaret Clark Leeper can be found in "Leeper Lineage" by David Rohrer Leeper (available in the local history collection of St. Joseph's County Public Library, South Bend, Indiana). For further information on the descendants of Robert and Mary Leeper Ward, I suggest trying to contact Pat Moser via the Carroll County, Ohio, Rootsweb list.
