I am still trying to find Bourbon, Ohio - Does anyone have access to an old Ohio Gazetteer - one that was published in the 1800's - or an old Postal Guide would also list places that were no longer in existence - or possibly had a name change. Thanks for any help you can give Marge Kientz Oak Ridge, Tennessee
Hi all, I hate to do this, but please do not send me any more look-up requests until after June 1. I have two huge reports and finals to get ready for, plus a new house to move into. I've been doing look-ups instead of my assignments--I need to set some priorities right now. I'll complete the ones that have already been sent, but I won't be able to do any more look-ups until after June 1. I can't keep any requests to complete later, either, because I'm moving and they'll just get lost. Everyone is more than welcome to send me any requests June 1. Again, I'm sorry but I'm being bombarded and I need to pass my classes first and foremost. Thanks for your patience and good luck to all!!! Jessie (Sarchet's History of Guernsey County)

If anyone is researching the following members of the Law family of Guernsey Co. OH I have identified the wives of William, Mathew, John and Thomas Law through names on property sales in the 1815 /1845 period In 1828 William Law and his wife Lovey sold property In 1815 Mathew Law and his wife Sarah sold property In 1830 John Law and his wife Jane sold property in 1845 Thomas Law and his wife Sarah sold property. I hope this helps someone....it proved for me that the Law family of Guernsey Co was NOT my Law family. If anyone is interested in these Laws I will gladly share info on the land sales. My great grandmother was Caroline Marquand from the Coshocton area of OH. From her family bible one of her brothers was R. H. Marquand of West Lafayette. Other siblings mentioned are E. U. Marquand, Catherine (married C. J. Robinson), Alice, Blanch, M. F. Marquand of New Castle, and B. A. Marquand. I have more information on the my branch of the Marquand family if you are interested, but so far I am just working off of a few family trees handed down from my grandparents. Jim Beck
I'm trying to piece together some possible connections between the families named above. If anyone can help unravel this, I'd appreciate your help! While my particular clan of BAY is that of Thomas Bay, Sr. who married Elizabeth Blackburn and who migrated from south of Winchester, VA to Cross Creek Twp., Washington County, PA to Spencer, Twp., Guernsey County and Cumberland, I've run across a number of other BAY names which seem to fit with another group, perhaps distantly related. The people are MARY BAY who married JOSEPH MULLIN (sometimes McUlin) on 17 Aug 1815 in Muskingum County. They had children according to IGI - JOSEPH MULLIN b 20 Feb 1822 in Zanesville and MARY JANE MULLIN b 20 Apr 1826 in Guernsey. According to IGI, the line is JOSEPH MULLIN m. TAMER A. PHILLIS who had son JOSEPH born 11 Mar 1786 in PA. He is the one who married MARY BAY in 1815. Joseph and Mary Bay Mullin had a son Joseph born in 1822 in Zanesbville and a daughter, listed as Mary "Catherine" b 14 May 1828 in Guernsey. She died in 1848 in Iowa County Iowa according to one source. Mary "Catherine" (don't know why it's listed that way) married John Nelson Smart and among their offspring is a TAMER ANN SMART. They evidently moved to Iowa after 1850. Then we have an 1848 marriage of THAMER ANN BAY to LEE OGAN in Guernsey. The unusal name of TAMER or THAMER makes me wonder if THAMER ANN BAY was daughter of a WILLIAM CAMPBELL BAY and ANNA WILSON who married in Guernsey in 1822. There was probably some connection between WILLIAM C. BAY and the PHILLIS family, particularly Joseph and Charles since William sold some land to those two and ended up in court after much controversy over the deal. Where the Wilsons come in is not certain but I've also found a John Phillis and wife Isabell Wilson who had a son, Joseph, b. about 1838 in Ohio. And J. W. and Prudence Marshall (who later married my Thomas Bay, Jr.) were grandparents of a Mary Phillis. I have a hunch that Mary Bay was sister of William Campbell Bay and of Catherine Bay Whitaker (Mrs. Peter Whitaker) and the three were children of Robert Bay and Ann Gibson, but this is only a hunch. The other couple in the mix are Joseph Bay and Catherine (Katharine) Derrick Bay, married in 1813 in Jefferson County, but ending up in Zanesville, Muskingum County. I have a feeling that these Bays, Phillis', Marshall's and perhaps Mullins all came from the northern part of Washington County, PA - Smith Twp or thereabouts. I am not asking anyone to do a real look up as do not know the county for someone to start looking in. But in a 1870 Census in Miami Co, Indiana it stated that my Gr Grandparents were born in Ohio His name was CALVIN HOLMAN born abt. 1837 and her name was WAITY A. HOLMAN born abt. 1836. If anyone would happen to run across them, would you please let me know? I wouldnt think they would be in Ohio before the year 1864 as it shows his first born children being twin boys born 1864 in Indiana. But I would think anytime before 1864 they may well have been in Ohio. I figure if they were both born there, they may have married there as well. Any info you may find would sure be helpful. Thank you. ..Jeff Bright

FYI--Glenn has a good suggestion. When I was in Cambridge, I found the probate records for death, marriages, and births in the courthouse--what Melissa copied off was probably the microfilmed version that they had at the library. The originals are in the courthouse right behind the library--they are indexed and the births are even indexed on notecards. Like Glenn said, these are only available so far back. I'm unaware of a gov't source for early vital records for Guernsey county. I got my dates from cemetery records. I would sure love to find out how he died, though.
