I have another REED connection to Guernsey and Noble counties: My Nancy Jarvis (daughter of Bazel Jarvis and Rachel Hissey), b. about 1840, married 18 Mar 1860 in Guernsey County to Robert Reed. Nancy is sister of my ggfather James Jarvis. She and Robert are listed in 1860 census with Rachel Hissey Jarvis in NE Noble County near Batesville. Anyone have a connection with this Reed family? Hi, Faith, On the Guernsey County Ohio GenWeb Project web page, I see you had submitted a list of the students, who had attended the first school built in Washington Twp. (1825). Some of the students are listed singly, while others are listed together on a single line and also share the same surname. Are all the students, who are listed together on a single line siblings, or might some of those listed together just simply share the same surname? For example, your ancestors Ambrose, Benjamin, Margaret & William REED are listed together on one line. They would all be the children of John S. REED and Ellen CUNNINGHAM. Yet, the student John REED is listed separately 2 lines down. Is this John the brother of those mentioned above or perhaps their cousin? I'm asking because I'd like to know if John EDWARDS, who is listed beside Lewis EDWARDS, is Lewis's brother. Lewis EDWARDS is my 3rd great grandfather. In addition, 2 lines down from Lewis EDWARDS, Elisabeth WILSON (who might be the one who is my 3rd great grandmother) is listed together with William, Bazzil, & Rachel WILSON. Knowing this tidbit of information would greatly increase my number of "found" ancestors, and would give me some great leads. Thanks so much for your time and for answering my previous questions. Susan Petty P.S. It was interesting to note that Lewis B. KINGSBERRY, the first teacher at the first school in Washington Twp., was also the Justice of the Peace for Lewis EDWARDS' and Elizabeth WILSON's wedding, according to their marriage record, March 29, 1838.
I have seen several posting recently regarding the Reed surname. Does anyone have Reed's that went from Guernsey Co., OH to Vermilion County, IL in the early 1800s? My Davis's moved from Belmont County, OH to Vermilion County, IL by 1827 and one of their daughters, Mary Davis b. c. 1828 married a James Reed there in 1846. Would like to learn more about his family. Next question -- Do any of you Reed researchers have a connection to Jim Reed, who married Belle Starr? Carolyn Budsmum@home.com

Hi, Susan, Do you know if your Jesse WILSON and Rachel REED also had a daughter named Ellen, born about the same time? There is also a James WILSON who may be a brother of one or the other or both. They married brother and sister William Cummins CRANSTON and Sarah CRANSTON, respectively, who were from Oxford Twp. S R C A cott obert ranston nderson phssra@physics.emory.edu

Hi Faith, Thanks for posting all the great information on the REED's and the land records from Washington Twp. Do you have the names of Benjamin REED's and Jemima EDINGTON's daughters? My ancestor Rachel REED's date of birth would be around the time period you listed for the brothers John, George, and James REED; 1790, 1796, 1798, respectively. I'd like to include/rule out Benjamin and Jemima as the parents of Rachel REED. Thanks. Susan Petty
Please reply to the group on this one, I would like to know, and I'm sure others are interested. I would be interested in the Guernsey/Belmont information as well. I am researching Dr. James Hood who practiced in Fairview, Guernsey Co., OH and I just found him listed in the 1840 census in Belmont! Thank you, Winnie Boothe
I assume from your other posts that these are Washington TWP land ownership. How did you come by these records -- if these are 1840 land records, what do the other 18xx dates mean -- are there records for other townships/towns? I have seen the 1820-1832 tax records. I haven't found anything past 1832, but really need to research the 1830's and '40's. Thanks, ==mwh "Faith Keahey" <keahey@fiberpipe.net> writes: << Section 1 - had John Smith 1805 &1808, Samuel H. Does any one on this list have any information about a Gardner and Elizabeth Hunt land owners in Guernsey County at 1820. Also seeking information about William Abraham Edie and his wife Isabella, any response or information would be appreciated DavidUhrey@aol.com
My g-g-g-grandma's name was supposedly Mary READ (REED?). Family lore is that James RALSTON b. 1799 in SCT, emig. to Guernsey Co. some time around 1825-1830 with wife Martha. Martha died, then he married Eliza MATHERS (MATHEWS), who d. . He m. Mary READ and they had a son, my g=g=grandpa William Read RALSTON b. 1851. A few years later Mary, James, and their family moved to Winterset, Madison Co., IA. James had 5 children by 1st wife, 4 children by 2nd, and my g-g-grandpa William by his 3rd wife Mary. According to William's death cert., filled out by his daughter Mabel in 1908, Mary READ was b. in Ireland, so maybe she fits in with the other Irish REED families? Jeannie Smith
