    1. [OHGUERNS] Obituary of Francis BRANINGER (1818-1895)

    3. Posted on: Guernsey Co. Oh Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/GuernseyObits/10127 Surname: BRANINGER, SNYDER, SEVERNS ------------------------- Francis Braninger died at his residence in Birmingham, Guernsey County, Thursday morning, November 7th, 1895, in the 78th year of his life. With the death of "Uncle Frank," as he was familiarly and widely known, Guernsey County loses one of its pioneer citizens, and Birmingham its oldest inhabitant. Born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, his father's family removed to this county, settling on a farm near Birmingham, when he was five years old. At an early age he was apprenticed to James Rosemond, with whom he learned the saddlery and harness trade. After his apprenticeship, for some years he did journey work in several of the principal towns of this state and West Virginia. Tiring of this he returned to Birmingham and at the age of twenty-eight years married Miss Jane P. Snyder. He opened a shop of his own, which he continued successfully for forty years, after which he retired from active business, but for a number of years held an interest in the general mercantile business of Braninger & Severns. His wife and seven children, four sons and three daughters, survive him, and all were present at the funeral except Jacob, whose sickness at his home in the far west prevented his attendance. Two children, Adda and Eli, died in youth; and the sons all settled in farms in the west, Jacob, Rolland and Clayton, near Marysville, Missouri, and Alfonzo, near Waterloo, Iowa. The daughters, Mrs. W.B. Severns and Misses Alice and Emma, reside in Birmingham. Mr. Braninger was a close observer, a man of sound judgement, of frugal habits, a quiet, peaceable citizen.

    3. Posted on: Guernsey Co. Oh Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/GuernseyObits/10126 Surname: SEVERN, BRANIGER, WHITACRE, SPECK, MASON ------------------------- >From the Cambridge "Daily Jeffersonian" (Guernsey Co., OH) William B. Severn was born in Cambridge, Ohio, February 16, 1844, and his boyhood days were spent in this city. He came to Birmingham in 1861, having been employed as a clerk for the firm of Craig and Foy, with whom he remained until 1868, when he removed to Westchester, where he established himself in the mercantile business. After a lapse of four years he returned to Birmingham , to become the proprietor of W.B. Severn's General Store in which capacity he was actively engaged until a short time prior to his death, when failing health made it imperative that he withdraw from actual participation in the business which had engrossed his attention for almost half a century. Mr. Severn united with the M.E. church at Westchester in 1870; later transferring his membership to the Birmingham M.E. church of which organization he remained a member until his death. He was married on March 27, 1867 to Mary A. Braniger of Birmingham, and to this union the following children were born: Frank R. Severn of Birmingham; Miss Ola Severn of the home; H.A. Severn and J.H. Severn of Colorado, and Mrs. H.A. Whitacre of New York City. Besides his immediate family Mr. Severn is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Oscar Severn, of Summerton; J.M. Severn and J.F. Severn of Cambridge; Charles Severn of Columbus; Mrs. A.Y. Speck, of Birmingham; Miss Kate Severn, of Cambridge; and Mrs. John Mason, of Indian Camp. Mr. Severn had been afflicted for some time with a hardening of the arteries. A few days before his death he rapidly grew worse and the family was summoned to his bedside but their tender care was unavailing and on the evening of November 29, 1919, he gently passed from the sleep of life to the sleep of death. Mr. Severn was one of the most widely known and universally respected men of the community where he had so long resided. His unswerving integrity, unfailing courtesy and genial disposition have won for him the respect and admiration of a wide circle of friends who join the bereaved loved ones to mourn his loss and revere his memory. Funeral services were Wednesday, December 3rd in the bormingham M.E. church by Rev. J.C. Wilson of Buffalo, a former pastor and interment was made in the Hopewell cemetery.

Oh Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/GuernseyObits/10125 Surname: SEVERNS, WALLER, KING, MASON, SPECK ------------------------- John Severns died at his residence on Gaston Avenue Monday, December 14th, 1891 in the 79th year of his age. He was born in Preston County, W. Va. in 1812, and when a small boy was taken to raise by his grandfather, William Waller, who was a local preacher of the M.E. church, and had a horse mill known as "Waller's Mill" on the Claysville road. John was apprenticed to learn the hatter trade with Jesse Johnson in Cambridge. After his time was completed he continued in the business, working as a jour or carrying on a shop in Cambridge. He was married to Martha Jane King, daughter of Benjamin King, one of the early settlers of Cambridge, in 1842; she has been dead for a number of years. There is a family of five sons and three daughters, all living. He was for forty eight years a member of the M.E. church, and for many years the sexton. His life was quiet and inoffensive, and one of toil and hard struggle. In his younger years he held some of the minor township offices, and in his politics always Democratic. He filled his days and place well, and rests from his labors. The funeral services were conducted by Dr. S. Burt and Dr. W.V. Milligan, interment in the Cambridge Cemetery. NOTE: John's children, not listed in the obituary, were: William B., Oscar, John Fletcher, James Monroe, Charles, Mary Catherine (Kate), Elizabeth B. (Lyde) (MASON), and Sarah A. (SPECK).

    3. Posted on: Guernsey Co. Oh Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/GuernseyObits/10124 Surname: STEWART, BURDEN, THORNBERRY, DOUGLASS, RINEHART, TIDRICK ------------------------- >From the Guernsey Times, April 15, 1875: STEWART - Near Winchester, Guernsey county, Ohio, William Stewart, in his 62d year; was born in Washington Co., Pa., April 8th, 1813; his parents with their family moved near Winchester in the year 1815, and he was married to Jane Burden in the year 1837, with whom he lived until his decease. United with the United Presbyterian Church at Antrim, Guernsey county, Ohio in the year 1845, and continued as a member thereof until called to the church triumphant. Being well acquainted with the deceased for over forty years: he was a kind husband an affectionate father, a man of great generosity, never turned any away empty. His disease was cancer of the face, commencing in the upper lip, then under the left ear, eating in until the jugular vein, windpipe and jaw bone could be seen, the vacuum being quite large. It was over twelve years doing its work; in all his sore affliction scarcely a murmur was heard from him. Shortly before his death in conversation with him gave good evidence of his acceptance with his Maker, told me his trust was in Jesus. He left the darkness of earth to enter within the mansions of eternal glory, where they need not the light of the sun, for the Lord God giveth them light. He leaves a wife, nine children and one sister, the only one of his father's family to mourn his loss, but their loss is his infinite gain. "Beyond the flight of time, Beyond the reign of death, There surely is some blessed clime, Where life is not a breath, Nor life's affections transient fire, Whose sparks fly upwards and expire." NOTES: (1) "Winchester" is now called Winterset. (2) William and Jane's nine children, not listed in his obituary were: John B., David McB., William M., Elizabeth (THORNBERRY), Thomas, Anne (DOUGLASS), James H., Hannah Susan (RINEHART), and Frances Lenora (TIDRICK).

    1. [OHGUERNS] DUFF, STANLEY, HAMILTON, SMITH
    2. Dear list, I will follow with the known children of Nicholas Smith (c.1793 -1872) and Sarah "Sally" Hamilton who were married in Guernsey County on 25 January 1819. I have no idea who Sarah Hamilton's parents were, but assume they were living in Guernsey county at the time of Sarah's marriage in 1819. (Could Sarah's parents have been James and Rebecca Hamilton of Guernsey County?) Nicholas and Sarah (Hamilton) Smith moved to the New Concord area after their marriage, but their daughter Mariah, who married into the Duffs, lived in Cambridge. Nicholas and Sarah had: 1 boy Smith born c. 1819-20 2 boy Smith born c. 1820-25 (may have been named Goerge) 3 Mariah A. My Joseph Emley b. 10-20-1827 in Ohio was the son of Joseph Emley and Mary Dilliha. Joseph Jr. married Rosanna Gusman and had 10 kids and was living in Hocking Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio in 1900. Joseph Jr's death certificate( 2-23-1915) says that his parents, Joseph and Mary Dilliha Emley were born in MD. The 1900 census says that all 3 were born in Ohio. Guess it depends on who you interview. Anyways, looking for people of that name and variations that came from Maryland or Ohio. Even some small clue may help. Thanks

I made an error in stating Maj. William and Nancy came to Ohio in 1806 - it was actually 1804. I have always heard Nancy was from "near Philadelphia" (William's family had settled "near Lewistown PA." when they came from Ireland) Do you have any confirmation on this "near Philadelphia"? Do you have any of William and Nancy's childrens names? My ancestor is their fifth child - WIlliam. I have been corresponding with a Debbie Weisenberger from Indiana who has a William Henderson born 9/25/1831 - whom we believe is a son of John Henderson born 1810. We think "my William" and "her John" are brothers. (two of William and Nancy's children.) Any information is much appreciated.

OH Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Guernsey/11559 Surname: Clendennin, Henderson ------------------------- Clendennin/Henderson of Guernsey Co., Oxford Twp. Ohio: WILLIAM HENDERSON and NANCY ANN CLENDENNIN (b. 1780, near Philadelphia, PA.) were my 3-great grandparents. My research which is far from complete, is on the Hendersons - my maternal grandmother was MARY MELISSA HENDERSON, daughter of JONATHON HENDERSON and ELIZABETH SMITH; granddaughter of WILLIAM HENDERSON and MARY (POLLY) VANCE; and great-granddaughter of Maj WILLIAM HENDERSON and NANCY ANN CLENDENNIN. Maj William and Nancy Henderson came to Ohio in 1806 with their four oldest children (they went on to have 12 - son William was the fifth child.) They settled in "Oxford Twp, in the valley of Salt Fork Creek where Zane's Trace made a sharp turn west. This land now part of eastern Guernsey Co., was the seventh of what was known as the Seven Ranges. These ranges were the first public lands west of the Ohio River to be surveyed by the United States government." There is a family story about Nancy being called a "Good Squaw" by the leader of a band of starving indians, who had planned to attack her homestead - but she spotted them while she was baking bread. She hid her children and then loaded up her apron with all her bread and took it to the indians. They returned several days later and brought her a deer, and pronounced her a good squaw! There was a published account of this story in the Columbus Dispatch Magazine section on April 1, 1979 - written by one of the many Henderson descendants. This writer referred to Nancy "Clendillon" - but I have always heard CLENDENNIN. Nancy was 17 years old when she married William. William became a major during the War of 1812.

OH Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Guernsey/11558 Surname: Henderson, Clendennin, Vance ------------------------- Henderson's of Guernsey Co., Quaker City, Ohio: I am new to geneology, having picked up information I collected 20 years ago, and trying to build from there. There is additional information which I am working to obtain from my grandmother's sister's family in Quaker City. My maternal grandmother was MARY MELISSA HENDERSON (b.Dec. 1, 1878 in Quaker City; d.Jan. 31, 1959 in Zanesville, Ohio - her home was in Cumberland/Chandlersville area though.) (1) Mary was one of four children (Maud, Charlie, Hattie) of JONATHON HENDERSON (b.1843 Guernsey Co.) and ELIZABETH SMITH whom he married in Quaker City in 1872. (Jonathon had a twin brother David,- 122nd Reg., Co. H, OVI - who died at Andersonville Prison in Georgia on Oct. 23, 1864.) (2) Jonathon Henderson was one of 12 children of WILLIAM HENDERSON (b.1806 Guernsey Co., d.Feb. 26, 1892)and MARY (POLLY) VANCE (b.1810). (3) William Henderson was the fifth of 12 children of Maj WILLIAM HENDERSON (no birth or death date)and NANCY ANN CLENDENNIN (b.1780)who came to Oxford Twp from PA in 1804. Maj William became a major in the War of 1812. He was a blacksmith, and made the sword which he carried during the war. (4) Maj. William was the oldest child of JOHN HENDERSON (b.1747 County Down Ireland. d.1814 near St. Clairsville, Ohio) and MARTHA LONG (b. 1754/ d.1829) John and Martha had nine children. (I believe John was in the Revolutionary War - but can't put my hands on family documentation yet.) In 1804, John and Martha sold their 330 acre farm near Lewistown, PA for $5333.00 to John Campbell. They came to Ohio, bought land, and built a home near St. Clairsville, Ohio. Per family history, the deed was signed by President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of State James Madison. (5) John Henderson was a son of WILLIAM AND AGNES HENDERSON, who came to America in 1758 from County Down Ireland, and settled near Lewistown, PA. Somewhere in my memory, I believe John and Agnes had 12 children - but that is also with family documentation which I am still trying to locate.

Great for confirming suspicions, but you won't find wife and children names there. 1850 fed census was first one to list all people in the household. Jeannie Smith
