Hi List, I need an answer to the following. Regarding 1860 US Ohio Census, Gue. Co., Cambridge Twp., Enum. date of Jul 26 by R. Savage. Series M653, Roll 696, Pg 299, Subpg A., Line 37 (among others). Listed are the names Alexander Clark and spouse Mary J. This column is of interest to me since both persons are "checked" as not being able to read or write. My copy of the census is not clear. So question #1 is, what exactly is the wording of this column 13? #2 the number "1" is used to mark this column for the individuals but the number is encased by parenthesis. Do the parenthesis have any significance? Thanks in advance for any help, Jan

OH living with his mother, Martha, & family in Guernsey Co., OH. His father John Delarue died in 1846. I have an 1846 copy of his will mentioning his wife Martha. Nicholas is listed with the occupation of Blacksmith. Martha was Martha Dennison (1804 VA - 1876 OH). I have pictures of John & Martha. They are buried in Mt. Zion Cem, Jackson Twp., Guernsey Co., OH. John had immigrated with many other families from Guernsey Isles - hence the name of the County. I believe Nicholas was born in Guernsey Co. though and not Guernsey Isles. I also have pictures of Nicholas' four sisters. One married my g-g-grandfather, James Duncan Abels.

I have found that even the Carrothers names was spelled several different ways also. Flushing at that time was probably part of Flint, or maybe like a suburb. I did see in one of the census showed them in Flint. To my knowledge they never lived in Flint. I recieved a message from another person today that told me all about Lucinda and her mother and father, James is such a common name in the Carrothers line that it will difficult to find his parents without a wifes name. I heard all my life that they were originally English, but I am leaning towards Ireland at the moment. I would be glad to share whatever info I have. Thanks again for answering Myrta

A Mr. Bell is referred to in my G-Grandfathers obit for bringing John Thomas Cole(s) to Rock Island County, IL, in 1861 from Quaker City, Guernsey County, Ohio. Sorry I don't know Mr. Bell's first name. Does anyone tie any Bell families to the Cole(s) families in Guernsey County? Thank you. Denise Cole (IL)

I am certain that the first citation applies, the second is a possibility. In the 1850 census Walter White 68 Farmer worth $2000 born Pa is living in Wright Township with Mary 48 also born Pa, Melissa 23 born Ohio, David Thompson 12 Ohio, and Emma White 10 born Ohio. Also in Wolfe's Stories of Guernsey County, p 767 under The Pottery Industry it says:"As early as 1819, a pottery - most probably the first to be established in Guernsey County -- was operated by William Sayre and Walter White near the place New Gottengen was afterward laid out in Richland Township. These pioneers in what afterwards became a leading Guernsey county industry manufactured the old red earthenware from surface or alluvial clays. Burnt at a comparatively low temperature, the product was somewhat soft and porous. Notwithstanding the poor quality of this ware, Sayre and White found a ready market for it. They peddled it through the country, and sold it wholesale to stores. As money was scarce, they often took merchandise for pottery From many miles around, people came to their plant to buy crocks, jars and jugs. After they had operated the plant for several years, they dissolved the paartnership, and Mr. Sayre established a pottery of his own on the farm of William D. Frame, near the site of Gibson Station........" Josiah is listed as living in Wills township in 1850, age 33, tailor, $500, born O with Hannah 22 born ohio, William 6/12 and Jacob Adams 20 tailor in what appears to be a town filled with professionals(over 200 residences listed). None of the other White family members are listed in the index
