Author: lace L <[email protected]> Surnames: THOMPSON, BARNES, HAMMOND Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AWB.2ACE/2196 Message Board Post: Winifred Thompson was born September 24, 1906, in Cambridge, OH, the daughter of druggist Charles Milton Thompson (1879-1964) and Jessie Winifred Barnes (1881-1909). Her mother died when she was three, and she lived with her grandparents Barnes in rural Guernsey County, Ohio until her father's remarriage to Armintha Hammond in 1911. She graduated from Cambridge High School, and received her B.A. in speech from Muskingum College in 1929. She taught school in Sebring, Ohio, prior to her marriage. Robert Hockman and Winifred Thompson were married in New Concord on June 8, 1932, shortly after his graduation from medical school. During his internship, they made their home with his parents in Wheaton, IL, and Winifred took classes at Moody Bible Institute in preparation for mission work. The Hockmans applied to and were accepted by the Foreign Mission Board of the United Presbyterian Church in the summer of 1933. At Muskingum College, Robert had become friends with fellow student Malaku Bayen, a ward of Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie, and through this friendship he developed an interest in Ethiopian missions. They sailed October 14, 1933 from New York on the maiden voyage of the Italian S. S. Rex, and arrived October 25 in Alexandria, Egypt. Following a two-week orientation at mission hospitals in Assuit and Tanta, Egypt, they traveled by water and train to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, arriving there November 16. Robert was assigned as a surgeon on the staff of George Memorial Hospital in Addis Ababa where Dr. A. W. Pollock was director. Pollock's retirement and sudden death in early 1935 placed Hockman in the directorship. With the outbreak of the Italo-Ethiopian War in mid-1935, Hockman offered his services to Haile Selassie to head up a Red Cross unit. On loan from the mission to the International Red Cross for this purpose, he set up a medical station for Ethiopian forces along the battle front in the autumn. On December 13, 1935, he was killed while attempting to defuse an Italian bomb which had been dropped near his station. Winifred Hockman was evacuated from Addis Ababa to Egypt in July, 1935, where she gave birth to a daughter, Ruth Winifred (later Mrs. Gordon Bell) on October 30. Robert never saw his only child. Winifred and Ruth left Egypt for America in March, 1936, and settled with the William Hockmans in Wheaton. She delivered her first address about her mission experiences in Moody Church, Chicago, in May of that year. She taught at Westmont College in California, 1938-39, and returned to Wheaton due to ill health. In 1940 she began working primarily as Director of Student Housing. She retired in 1971, and in 1982 resided at her home in Wheaton.

Samuel F. KNOWLES was born near Allentown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, July 6, 1810, and died in Claysville, Guernsey County, Ohio, September 18, 1887. He was converted when about twenty, and united with the Methodist Episcopal chyrch, which he loved dearly all his life. He married Margaret P. HUGHES October 1, 1830. In 1833 they came to Ohio, settling in Guernsey County, where they lived for more than half a century. She preceded him 15 months to the home above. Having been licensed as Exhorter for some yearss, he was licensed as Local Preacher, and for many years was quite successful, extensive revivals often attending his labors. He always was found a helper to his pastors in all departments of work. He was ordained Deacon in 1858, and some years later was elected to Elder's orders. All offices from that down he held, and filled with great acceptability. Decided in his convictions, resolute in his understandings, he was generally successful. For six ye! ars he was afflicted, and endured sufferings beyond description, but in them all his faith never faltered. In his life example, and in his death, he has left a goodly heritage. He was the remaining brother of the Rev. Enoch KNOWLES, who died at Lambertville, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and John KNOWLES, who died at North Crosswicks, Burlington County, New Jersey. Two surviving sisters will, ere long, join them where family ties will nevermore be broken. Additional information: Note 1: 1850 US Census - Monroe, Guernsey County, Ohio - Household: Saml. Greetings to my BRITNELL cousins in Ohio. I am conducting a census for BRITNELL hopefully to be complete by March of 2005. During my research in the past fifteen years I have discovered that there are about 4000 of us using the name w/w. This name appears to be going into decline. To avert the total loss of the name, somewhere down the line of time, I am hoping that we can come up with a solution to avoid this. We need your participation. The BRITNELL name has an interesting history and it would be a terrible shame to lose it. I don't much like being an endangered species. For those BRITNELLs who did not receive a census package in the mail please email me here-->[email protected] OR: write to me at 35 Deerpoint Road, SE, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, T2J 6R3 I hope to have the census complete by March of 2005. Mary Anne Britnell
Scott, Well, 1800-1850 covers the timeline I was looking for. He is mentioned in one of Isaac Miskimen's Account books that covers 1841-1849, however I have come across his name in some deed books. I think those were in Wheeling Twp., but I didn't keep them as when I found the name I thought it was a different family - now I am not so sure. The Douglass family that I am primarily researching was in Liberty Twp., but families do spread out. And he could be an as-yet-undescovered cousin or other relative. I am trying to find out if Barton Douglass has any connection to the other early (1800-1850) Douglass families in Coshocton, Guernsey, and Tuscarawas Counties. If this man's name appears in your genealogy or any of your resources with other names, even if it is a list of neighbors, I would appreciate it if you would contact me. Knowing whom his wife or children are would be potential leads as well as where he came from. I know this is pretty open ended, but I can't find any information about him. Thanks, Patti
