John Shipman was a Commissioner of Guernsey County, Ohio, and his obituary in the Cambridge, Ohio "Cambridge Jeffersonian" of Feb 8, 1906, page 1, col 1 states that he was born in Lycoming County, PA in 1818. This obituary provides the link to the Shipman family of Lycoming Co., PA. John Shipman's father was Jacob Shipman, Jr; his grandfather was Jacob Shipman, Sr. & his great-grandfather was Matthias Shipman. Matthias Shipman & Jacob Sr. both fought in New Jersey in the Revolutionary War and are on the DAR Patriot list. Jacob Shipman of Guernsey County was born in Sussex County (present day Warren Co., NJ) in 1778, and was baptized at the St. James Lutheran (Straw) Church on April 1, 1778. In 1784, Jacob Shipman Sr. moved with his family from Sussex county to Lycoming Co., PA. Between 1820 & 1830, the families of Jacob Shipman, Jr., his brother David Shipman, and his sister Margaret Shipman Fiester moved to Ohio. David Shipman & family settled in Franklin Co.; he's buried in Dublin Cemetery. Henry Fiester, Margaret's husband, died in Harrison County about 1835. By 1850, Margaret Shipman Fiester had moved with six of her adult children from Harrison Co to Winterset in Guernsey Co. The Fiester connection makes me absolutely certain that the Jacob Shipman of Guernsey Co. was the son of Jacob Shipman, Sr. & his wife Maria. In fact, the cemetery listing for Allen's Cemetery has Hannah M. Shipman, wife of Commissioner John Shipman, buried right next to Charlotte Fiester Thomas, John Shipma! n's first cousin. I've been researching all the descendents of Jacob & Maria Shipman and would love to have additional info on this branch of the family.

I ran to a similar problem when looking through my Grandmothers bible. There was a obit from someone that I could not find any relationship. I made a few postings without success. I kept all of the info and about 3 years later the same last name showed up in my GGgrandmothers line and I was able to make a long distant cousin relationship. If nothing shows up now don't get discouraged just hang on. Don ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott R. C. Hi, Betty, It would be nice if people always preceded their messages with some context, but that bit of messaging etiquette is commonly ignored. So, unless you're keeping a copy of all of the messages coming over this mailing list, you have no choice but to go out onto the World Wide Web to look at the message board post and trace the thread back. So, for example, the message you describe comes with this URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AWB.2ACE/1652.1.2.1 Usually you just click on this URL and your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) will open, but sometimes you must copy and paste it into your web browser. In either case, you'll see the original post. It will be preceded by a line that says something like: In Reply to: Re: Hayes Family by: GD Wilson Clicking on the link "Re: Hayes Family" will take you to the message being replied to. In this case it is from a while back, 11 Sep 2003, so it's not surprising that you don't remember it.
