    1. William Miller
    2. Geo L
    3. Am seeking information on a William Miller from Cambridge, Ohio, his wife, daughter and grand daughter. William was the husband of my aunt whose name was Madeline Long. Madeline is believed to have been adopted and raised in Cambridge under another surname. William and Madeline had a daughter named "Suzie or Susan" (b. abt. 1942) and they had a grand daughter, I am not sure of her name, but am told the grand daughter married a Campbell. The grand daughter is believed to be still living in the Cambridge area. It is thought that Suzie moved from the area. Madeline has passed, I assume William has too. Thanks, George E. Author: Lois <[email protected]> Surnames: Stevens, Elliott, Riggs Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AWB.2ACE/2252 Message Board Post: Hello, I am researching my families from Ohio. My great great grandparents were living in and married in Guernsey Co in 1879, they were Sylvester Stevens and Annie Elliott. Annie's Mothers name was Ellen, we dont know who her father was. As for Sylvester, our family sais that his name was John Sylvester, but I am not sure about that, as I find no documentation with the name John on it. Even in his bible it is written belongs to Sylvester Stevens. I was thinking that he may have been Daniel Sylvester Stevens, son of J.S. Stevens and Rachel Riggs, only because in a letter my grandpa wrote stating that he had an aunt Jane and Daniel had a sister named Jane, and he is the right age. Can anyone shed any light on these two families? Thanks, Lois

    1. ADMIN: Selling Items
    2. Scott R. C. Anderson
    3. Hi, Everyone, I just wanted to remind everyone that the two qualifications for posting on this list are that the subject be both genealogical and directly related to Guernsey County. There are few other restrictions, most of which are common sensible, e.g. avoid frequent repetitious posts. This also applies to books, photos, etc. that people might want to sell. I think this can be a useful service to others, and it hasn't been a problem so far, so I don't see a need to restrict it as long as they qualify like other messages. 3. This is a Message Board Post that is forwarded to this mailing list. Author: Lace L <[email protected]> Surnames: Lett, Caliman, Brown, Guy, Tate, Simpson, Stevens, Hollins, Betts, Quarles Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AWB.2ACE/2247.1 Message Board Post: I would like to thank Scott R. C. Anderson OHGuerns,USAGen}[email protected] USGenWeb Coordinator, http://www.usgennet.org/usa/oh/county/guernsey/ for his request for additional information. Provided by Henry Burke, Historian This Lett line comes from Maryland and comes from the union of Samuel Delaney Lett and Jemima Banneker. Their children migrated through Pennsylvania to southeastern Ohio Meigs Township and thereafter Guernsey,Muskingum, Morgan and Belmont Counties. The Lett Settlement consisted of the Brown, Caliman, Clifford, Earley, Green, Guy, Harper, Lett, Lucas, Pointer, Simpson, Stevens, and Tate families to name a few. It became known as the "Lett Settlement " due to the fact that Lett family members outnumbered other families in the settlement. THE HISTORY OF THE LETT FAMILY: This Lett family history can be traced back to 1683 to the arrival of their ancestor, Molly Welsh, an English dairymaid, who had been falsely accused of a crime of theft. Due to her ability to read she was spared a death sentence and was sent to the English province of Maryland as an indentured servant. After seven years Molly was freed and eventually purchased her own small farm in Maryland. While she prospered she knew that she would need more help with her farm and began to save money. Although Molly was opposed to slavery, her survival left her with few options. Molly purchased two slaves and after a period of time freed both. She eventually married one of them, who was named Bannaka, an African prince from the Wolof Kingdom of Walo, located in Senegal. Molly took her husbands name as her surname, which eventually became Banneker. The couple had 4 daughters; the oldest of whom was also named Mary Mary married a former slave, who had converted to Christianity and changed his name to Robert and his wife?s last name. They had 5 children; 1 son and 4 daughters; Benjamin, Jemima, Julian, Minta and Molly. Benjamin Banneker is noted in United States history as the first African-American ?man of Science?, who among other accomplishments wrote an almanac, assisted in the surveying of Washington D.C. and made the first clock in America. Benjamin's sister, Jemima married Samuel Lett who was English and Native American, and of their 8 children, 7 migrated with their families and settled in MeigsTownship, Muskingum County, Ohio, which borders on Guernsey county. The Lett Settlement was a self-sustaining community of mixed race families; with the Letts, Calimans and Guys, forming ties with each other through marriages and common family backgrounds while living in Maryland and Virginia. Additionally it has been documented that the Tate and Norman families also resided in Maryland and had a long history of interactions with these families. These families were pioneers in Ohio, in the areas of civil rights, education and voting. The gathering of the Lett Settlement descendants reflect those connections of uncommon bonds of heritage and history. In past Lett reunions a"Tribute to our Elders" brought together many older family members who in many cases reside in Muskingum, Belmont or Guernsey Counties. The list of elders that have attended the 2004 were; Ruth Caliman Brown (100year old), Fred Betts (92) Charles Henry Lett (83) - Historian, Mary Hunter Weiker (83) Delaware Co, Ohio Justine Simpson Lett (82) Wilbur Norman (80) Historian, Ralph Caliman Sr. (80) Wanda Quarles Holbert (71) Wanda Quarles Holbert lived in Cumberland, Ohio,Guernsey county. At past reunions a Cumberland, Ohio Families Photographic Display, was presented by Susan Hollins. At one time period, the 1940's and 50's, LETT reunions were held in Guernsey county. Please note the Lett obituary on Guernsey county, Ohio Rootweb posted in 2004. Rev. Simpson of Cambridge, Ohio performed the memorial service.

    3. Good morning, Well the viaduct is still there and so is the train depot. They use the depot for other business' now but it has been restored. The viaduct has changed over the years but it is still pretty much the same today as it was in 1950. It is located in the west part of Cambridge. You can cross the viaduct and get on RT. 40 west. I have an old picture of the depot, but its not a very good one. One can view the tunnel if coming East on Rt. 40, just before coming into Cambridge. During the Winter months, it is easy to see. I have been wanting to take a picture of the tunnel but as of yet, haven't. Sure wish I had a better picture to send to you. I will do some searching, as I might have a post card of the train station and of the old viaduct. Betty W. of Guernsey Co. Oh. My brother took a trip when he was about 7 [in 1950]. He wrote: We boarded the B&O (Baltimore and Ohio) in Cambridge behind a steam engine and switched in Columbus to the New York Central behind a diesel for the trip to Springfield. I asked him where the depot was. "The depot was located between the viduct and the tunnel. You could hit the depot with a stone from the viduct. They also used to station a switch engine close by the depot. I stood in front of it once which is when I decided I loved big steam engines on wheels. One of our auto parts stores that we visited often was jsut east of the viaduct; almost underneath it and I nearly always stood along the tracks while Mom or Dad went to get their parts." I think the viaduct was in south Cambridge below Montgovery Wards. I can't place the tunnel my brother was referring to. Can anyone help? Brian L.
