Forwarded message; please direct any responses to the author listed at the end. -------------------------------------- Date: Saturday, July 10, 2004 9:11 AM MDT From: TOM BAY <[email protected]> *************************************************************************** Just published in May, "Some Members of the 18th Century Colonial American BAY FAMILY" , by Tommy L. West, offers documented research about three distinct clans of Bays who thrived in America during the 1700's. This hardbound book follows these BAY families through Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio and others states, carefully sorting out who's who among those Bays who so often shared common first names (Hugh, Thomas, William and James) and lived close to each other. The book pulls together many bits and pieces of BAY information, some long known but much more recently discovered. Of interest to BAY researchers in Muskingum, Guernsey, Morgan, and Noble counties is the unraveling of Bays from two separate clans (Pastor Bay and John Bay) and two distinct branches of Bays from the same clan (Captain Thomas Bay and Hugh Bay). The Nathan Bay family in Oxford Twp is from a different clan than the Bays of Spencer Twp and Cumberland. Most Bays in that vicinity were members of the Captain Thomas Bay family although there was a smattering of Bays from the Hugh Bay branch, too. The book provides data to clear up frequent confusion about two Robert Bays - one a Revolutionary and War of 1812 veteran and the other a Lt. Col during the War of 1812. Anyone interested in learning more about this book can contact the author, Dr. Tommy L. West at [email protected]

From William Newell Cowden my line goes to his son, Dr. David Cowden, a physician in Guernsey County for all his practicing career. His son, Harry, was a teacher and principal, and was my grandfather. My father, Robert, was a teacher (Cleveland) and then a professor of music education at the University of Cincinnati and Indiana State. I am a professor of psychology at Northern Virginia Community College (www.nvcc.edu/home/ccowden)--aren't you affiliated with Chico State? BTW, I googled your name and found a posting on the Robe board. Margaret Robe Summitt is a fantastic source for our Robes. I have corresponded with her and seen the folder of materials she deposited at the library in Brownsville, Oregon, where Robert Robe was minister. Lucille Cowden Kazee is also a fantastic source on the Cowdens. Since I don't know how much this will be of interest to the Guernsey Co. board, why don't you email me at [email protected]? I have ! a fair amount on William Newell. Does your history contain his ancestors? I have a couple of generations back. Yours in genealogy, Craig P.S. My brothers live in Indianapolis and Visalia, CA. My aunt's family naturally has a different name (Sparks). Some of them still live in Ohio (aunt-Springfield, and cousin-Cincinnati--though she goes by her married name--Fisher).

It's exciting to make a connection with one of my relatives. As second cousins once removed, could you please provide me with more detailed information regarding your own family? Logically, I assume that you are a decendent of one of William's brothers. All of the information I have on the Cowdens comes from one source; a family geneology which was compiled by my father's cousin twenty years ago. While it does provide some detailed accounts of William's sons, it is very scant in terms of William and his brothers and sisters. I am very interested in learning much more about each of the siblings, but I am equally trying to develop a contact list of any of the relatives who are still living. My father, Robert Wilson Cowden, the first child of Newell Cowden and Bessie Belle Roach Cowden, past away six years ago. All of his brothers and his sister are dead as well. While I have scanned the 2000 directory of Cowdens living in Ohio, I am at a loss as to who might be family as well

He was on the committee that purchased the grounds for the Ohio State Fair.

I'm following up the obit for the second wife of Col. Elijah Grimes, Nancy Lippincott Grimes of Cambridge, Guernsey Co., OH. Nancy Grimes died in 1898, and her obituary in the Cambridge Jeffersonian is as much about her husband, Col. Elijah Grimes, as it is about her. Fortunately, it gives the date of death--May 8, 1876--and age--87 yrs--for Col. Grimes, and the fact that he operated a hotel in Zanesville--the Zane House--which he ran for some years prior to his death. His extended family, though, was in Cambridge, where the obit states he was buried--as was his wife Nancy Lippincott Grimes. It was the second marriage for Elijah Grimes; his first wife, Suzanne Holtz Grimes, died in the 1830s. Both of his marriages occurred in Belmont Co., where Elijah Grimes ran both a mill and a hotel in Morristown. I'm hoping that there was a county death record for Elijah Grimes in Muskingum Co., and that it might possibly name his parents. He was born around 1789, and came to eastern OH as a soldier in the War of 1812. His military career advanced beyond this service, and upon leaving the military he went into the milling and hotel business, first in Morristown, and then on to Cambridge, ending up in Zanesville. From the obit for Nancy Grimes, it looks like both are buried in the cemetery in Cambridge. There is a possible connection between this Elijah Grimes and a Robert Grimes, also of Belmont Co., who died in 1866 and is buried in Barnesville. Both Robert and Elijah Grimes seemed to have lived in the Hendrysburg/ Morristown area between 1820 and 1840. Both men were--according to census data--born in MD; Robert Grimes looks to have been born ca. 1790/1...a couple of years younger than Elijah. It is not known where in MD these Grimes men were from. I am seeking any information one may have on my Great Grand Mother Joyce (Dover) Long (b. abt. 1857 Indiana). Joyce Dover-Long married Jonah K. Long (b.1846 Millwood Twp., Oh.) in Jasper County, IL on 7/9/1876. Sometime after 1883 the couple moved back to the Southeastern Ohio area. I am not sure exactly where they resided in Guernsey County for a while as Jonah was born there,. It is believed that while in Ohio Joyce Dover-Long passed away prior to the year of 1892. Jonah later married Emeline Nader and they resided in Crooksville, Oh. Any information about Joyce is sought. Below is Jonah's Obituary: Zanesville The Times Recorder 07 June 1926 Jonas Long Dies At Crooksville Sunday Afternoon Father of Mrs. Emma Long of This City Succumbs (Yes, it says Emma Long) CROOKSVILLE, O,.-June 5-- Jonas K. As stated yesterday Mr. Addy at the time of ther accident was walking through an orchard, on his way home after being out hunting. his wife who was in the yard at the time saw her husband walking towards home, and heard the discharge of the gun, quickly looking up saw Mr. Addy falling to the ground. Calling for help she ran to the assistance of her husband, who was carried to the house and Drs. Lackey of Hopewell and Lane of Bloomfield were called. Word was also sent to relatives in this city and Alvin Leeper a brother-in-law of Mr. Addy left yesterday morning for that place. Mr. Leeper returned to the city about noon today and reported that Mr. Addy was still living but that no hopes were entertained for his recovery. Mr. Leeper said that the right eye, part of the skull and a portion of the brains of Mr. Addy had been blown out by the explosion of his gun and when he left the bedside of the injured man he was unconscious but living. >From the surroundings Mr. Leeper said it seemed that Mr. Addy had aimed at some object before the accident nad then changed his mind had placed the gun on his shoulder without first putting the hammer down and in walking through the orchard some of the branches of the trees, which were all low, had caught the hammer, discharging the gun, which was heavily loaded, and the gun burst.
