Perhaps they're referring instead to the Monroe County (neighboring) courthouse fire of 1867. "The records that were destroyed in the 1867 fire of the Monroe County Court House were the Probate Records: marriage, birth, wills and death. The Deed Records and Common Pleas Court Records are still available." http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Eohmonroe/mlocal.htm Juli At 08:49 AM 8/10/2005, you wrote: >I have been told by several individuals that documents were lost in a >courthouse fire. I have been told by several individuals that documents were lost in a courthouse fire. When I contact the courthouse to inquire about the fire, and how a duplicate death certificate might be acquired, they tell me that there never was a fire in any Guernsey County government building that led to the loss of documents. I am curious if anyone knows whether there was or wasn't a fire. My Great-Great-Grandfather, Otho(Otha) Berg, died in Sept of 1913, in a mining accident in Guernsey County, near Byesville, according to mostly oral, and some written family history. I am reaching my wits end trying to verify this information, and/or get more information on him and his death. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Hello, I just recently found out that I am closely related to these people. Thomas was born abt. 1827 either in Ohio or England and married Julia Sheely Oct. 20, 1859 in Guernsey county, Ohio. Thomas died in 1891 in Linton township, Coshocton county, Ohio and Julia died in 1911 in the same township and county. They are both buried in Plainfield Cemetery. I am trying to find parents to both of these people. This is how I am related: their son Johnson B. Weaver married Eliza J. Maple, Eliza was a sister to my great grandfather Sherman General Maple. Any help is appreciated. jamie

The phone number for the museum is #740-685-3251. There is also a note posted on the museum door itself that says that if you are at the museum and want to visit it when it is closed that you can contact Jeanetta Watson at 740-685-2812. The Museum is located at the corner of Main & Second (at the street light) in downtown Byesville. There is also across from the train depot, which is on 2nd Street Downtown, a Coal Miners Museum. That is where I found the information for the Guernsey County Web Site. Hope this info helps! Mary
