They were the United Presbyterian Church and The Methodist Episcopal Church. I know that the Presbyterian church was there in the 1800's and beleive it was the first church. At some point around 1947 it was closed. That left just the Methodist Church. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [OHGUERNS] Cemetery Readings of North Half of Jackson Co, WV
    2. Announcing Cemetery Readings of Jackson County, West Virginia North of U.S. Route 33 (Includes burials up to Summer 1978) by George W. Archer Some background to the the readings: Over the last 30 years, I have done a global study of all Jackson Co., WV Archers (where my father was born) and their ancestors and descendants and their migrations, covering 10 or more generations, part of a larger study of all the descendants of Patrick Archer c. 1717- c. 1793, the Irish Catholic immigrant, from whom the Jackson Co. WV Archers descend. During the summers of 1977 and 1978 I recorded every stone in nearly every cemetery north of U.S. Route 33 in Jackson Co., WV looking for my grandfather, Stephen N. Archer 1854 - Jan 1884 (Stephen, Nathan, JamesI, Patrick), without success. In the Fall of 2007, I audited the transcriptions made by a voluneer of 20 hours of audio tapes containing 6,000 names in 63 cemeteries and then indexed and published it in both hard copy and as CD's for distribution to selected libraries listed below. Then I gave the files to Rootsweb to include on their Cemetery Project. The URLs below point to the full 600 page document of which 300 pages is an index including cross-indexed women's maiden names). The main link to the collection on RootsWeb is: >>> http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/westvirg/jackson2.html <<< (This displays links to the URLs below) Introduction: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wv/jackson/cemetery/intro.txt Notes: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wv/jackson/cemetery/notes.txt Index: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wv/jackson/cemetery/index.txt (Comment: the page numbers in the index refer to the printed version in WordPerfect 5.1, but may be useful to someone to verify that a name is present in the readings) Sources: (bibliography) http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wv/jackson/cemetery/sources.txt There is no on-line index to the entire collection, and at present I do not intend to do an HTML encoded index for all 63 cemeteries. RootsWeb preferred to make each cemetery a separate file accessible with an URL instead of a single searchable file that would take longer to load but would be easy to search if each name in the index were hyper-linked to the entry in one of the 63 cemeteries. With the exception of an ARCHER index linked to specific cemeteries, you will have to search each of the files separately for the burial/names you are looking for. Eventually Rootsweb may create an HTML-linked every-name index to all 63 cemetery files. For the benefit of ARCHER surname researchers, I have created below an index to the cemetery readings containing all 107 ARCHER-surnamed persons including non-ARCHER women married to an ARCHER. This can be accessed at http://http://www.archercousins.com/ArcherAssn/ main page and click on "Jackson Co. WV Cemetery Readings." Find the names you want and that will take you to the text of the readings where that ARCHER (including a married woman named ARCHER) is buried. There are copies of the entire document in four versions on CD: Plain Text -ASCII MS-Word WordPerfect 5.1 (DOS with page-numbered index) HTML in the following libraries: Public Libraries: Jackson Co. WV: Ripley and Ravenswood Wood Co., WV, Parkersburg Washington Co., OH: Washington - Genealogy Library collections Ft. Wayne, IN - Genealogy Dept Ohio Genealogical Society: Mansfield, OH - Society Headquarters OGS Chapters: Monroe Co., OH Guernsey Co., OH Other Libraries: Family History Library, Salt Lake, UT Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. (has a hard copy and CD) West Virginia Archives, Library, Charleston, WV Boone, NC: Appalachian State Teachers College- Appelechia Collection If you have access to these libraries, I have given them permission to make copies of the entire CD or any of the 4 text versions and the included images of road maps showing locations of the 63 cemeteries in Jackson Co. Take your own CD or make arrangements locally to cover library CD costs. Contact: George Archer - garcher@wdn.com George W. 3. DearListers: I am intrigued by what I have read about an Alexander Campbell (m. 1820, Eleanor Little) family, not the least of which is the reference in the 1850 U.S. Census for Ohio (Guernsey) to (i) a daughter Emily R. Campbell b. about 1838, (ii) to the proportion of sons vs. daughters in that family, and (iii) to the possibility from the Census that an older child of the family was one Thomas W. Campbell, age 25, a lawyer, then living apart from the rest of his family. The origins of my interest lies in the excerpt from the following letter written by my great grandfather, Rev. Thomas Swainston Campbell, dated 3 June 1907, to his son Wilfred Campbell. T.S. Campbell was only 3 or 4 when his father died in 1835, so I believe that he may have confused the generations. The excerpt reads: "I would like very much to find out my uncle Alexander's family. He came to America some time previous to my father. There was a large shipload of them from the same section of Derry, & almost all of them relatives by blood or marriage. They all settled together. McKinleys & Harrisons were among them. My uncle Alexr. was the eldest of the family. He survived my father several years left seven sons & one daughter the youngest being called Emily after my mother. The eldest sons were Alexr, Robert & Jas & Thomas, the names of the others I do not know. Robert went to California in 49 & made money & and that is all I know about him. Thomas became a lawyer but died of consumption a year or two after he passed - he was the only one that used to write us, & after he died all correspondence ceased." [emphasis added] A branch of my Campbell family emigrated from Ulster in the early 19th century to Ohio; with the head being an Alexander Campbell (with wife possibly named Mary), and who is supposed to be the eldest child of James and Elizabeth Campbell who, prior to leaving for Upper Canada in 1820 with their youngest child Thomas (a one-time licentiate of the Presbyterian Church in Ulster and later a minister of the Church of England in Upper Canada) and other members of the family, were residing at Lisnagrot, two miles from Kilrae, in the parish of Tamlet O'Crilly, Londonderry. I doubt for a number of reasons that the members of the family were long-time residents of Lisnagrot. The father, James Campbell, of the Township of Thurlow, aged 84 years, died on the 21st. and was buried on the 23rd. of March, 1830. Elizabeth, his wife, aged 77 years, died on the 25th. and was buried on the 27th of July 1828. There were five known children of the marriage of James and Elizabeth Campbell, as follows: (i) Alexander Campbell, (ii) Margaret Campbell, (iii) Catherine [Campbell] Cunningham, (iv) Robert Campbell, and (v) Thomas Campbell. The 11th September 1830 issue of the Kingston Chronicle [Kingston, Upper Canada] reads: "Married .... On Thursday, the 9th inst. at St. Thomas' Church, Belleville, by the Hon. and Right Rev. the Lord Bishop of Quebec, the Rev. Thomas Campbell, A.M. Rector of said Church, to Emily Rosa, youngest daughter of the late Thomas Swainstone of London, Merchant." [emphasis added] There were three children of the marriage: Thomas Swainston Campbell born 1831, Eliza Sophia [Campbell] Carroll born 1833, and Anna Maria Pearson [Campbell] Ridley born 1835. I wonder whether any of this information/data resonates with you? I would be pleased to discuss more of this with anyone if you think there may be a family connection, or for any reason. Thanks in advance. Judith Giffin Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada <JFGiffin@eastlink.ca>
