Could I join this discussion about names and listing them for the census takers? I found Harvey Downey and his mother in 1860 by looking for his sister Rebecca Downey. The mother was remarried and all were living on the same farm as with first husband but listed under the new name McIntosh. Harvey was listed Downey, but not Harvey - the H was blurry and unreadable. I never would have found it if I hadn't gone after Rebecca. Harvey disappear again so in 1870 Census, I looked at McIntosh and thank God they changed the Census so we can look at the actual names, because there was Harvey, his new wife and baby all listed as McIntosh under the stepfather's name. So, it is a challenge!!! And I love the hunt. Linda Swaney Sabin
