This was in Tues, 8 May, Springfield MO News Leader, p. 5B: Discovery of cemetery halts roadwork--Associated Press-Kansas City-- Construction of a new highway in south Kansas City has been halted by the discovery of a small cemetery dating back to the Civil War era. State officials are anxious to find any descendants of the Holloway family who are buried in the cemetery. If the heirs can't be found, the state will have to get court permission to move the nine graves in the plot, in order to finish a new Missouri 150. Construction workers recently unearthed a marble headstone, dating from 1858, while moving a large section of water pipe. Archaeologists later found another headstone and evidence of seven other graves. The site has not been disturbed further. Please pass this on to other lists. ==== ROWANROOTS Mailing List ==== The list administrator can be reached at [email protected]
I am going to SLC this Sunday for four days. I have 20 days work planned, but a lot of it will be on Greene County Probate records. Andrew Downey's Probate is one of the things at the top of the list. It must exist and should name all of the kids. That would be a great help. The trouble is, I don't know when he died. I certainly know what you mean about getting sidetracked. No. I am just frustrated! I have run off maps of Ohio in 1803 and taped them to the wall next to my computer to remind me of how the area looked in 1800. I just can't believe that it was only 200 years ago and there are so few documentable records. I am continually search out your Elizabeth Becks connection to Andrew Downey and I don't see proof, but I am new to all of this. Also I keep getting sidetracked - now by all this Moses and Phebe Badgley information from NJ. And then by how the names Miller, Badgley and Downey pop up in various combinations, living near each other. Even in Michigan! No, I am not rubbing it in. I am eternally grateful to you and all the wonderful genealogy souls for your interest in a new genealogistis diseased person. We need to patent that word and get a firm spelling for computer dictionaries! Have a good day. Linda Swaney Sabin, Beavercreek

Ah, but the worm comes out when you go back through Mary Jane Downey who married Enos Neff Gordon, 29 Oct 1863, and try to tie her to which parents? Linda Swaney Sabin
Curious as to whether anyone has come across anything on Mary E. Walker of Yellowsprings in Greene County or her husband Dr. Edward T. Dale- (ET's parents and beginning are unknown). For some unknown reason Mary was shipped to Yellowsprings by her parents from Fairlawn, Shelby County IN in the late 1840s to live with her aunt and uncle the Joseph McIntoshs (believed to be her mother's sister). She went to Antioch College in 1862-63; was in the 3rd preparatory school at Antioch College in 1863-64; and was still at Antioch in 1865-67 part-time when advised to leave because of ill health. Married Edward Tyndal Dale in 1868, and in 1868 was running a rooming house in Yellowsprings. Of her Husband Edward Tyndal Dale the only knowledge begins when he graduated from Antioch in 1867 or 68. He was also in attendance in 1858 shortly after the College came into being per college records. One thought is the newspaper of that day might have printed a story or two on - returning soldiers - on the wedding - on a new teacher at a local school . >From 1860-64 ET was in the War - was at the battle of Wilson's Creek - but his unit is unknown and no Archive information has ever been found, although he was given a soldier's burial in Yellowsprings in 1881 - star on tombstone 1870-71- ET and Mary were in Little Rock, AK. ET was superintendent of schools 1874 - Graduated from Long Island Sch of Medicine in NY - diploma 1877 - Bought two lots in Texarkana, AK from the RR - per Title company 1878 - Graduated from Bellvue Medical College in NY - diploma 1879 - Helped start School for Physicians and Surgeons in Little Rock 1879 - Master Mason, and on 13 August 1979 was made a Representative of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Maryland to build the Grand Lodge of Arkansas - copy of certificate 1880 - Led drive to Incorporate Texarkana, Ark. - per Newspaper 1880-81 - President of Arkansas State Medical Society - per U of A 1881 - Died in Little Rock September 29, 1881 - Obit in paper 1881 - August recieved soldier's burial in Yellowsprings, Greene County, OH - son 1 - Gilbert Tyndal L. Dale b/d 1868 - 1868 buried in Yellowsprings, OH - son 2 - Dr. Joseph Edward Dale I (MD) 1869-1923 - 1869 Born in Yellowsprings, Greene County, - Age 15 went to Antioch College, Taught school Yellowsprings - Master Mason - Blue Lodge - Youngest Master on record - Age 24 Grad 1894 Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery - Practiced in Yellowsprings, Greene County, OH until 1900/1901 - Moved to Fort Collins, CO because son had TB - died 1921 son 3 - William (Willie) Ethelbert T. Dale b. 27 August 1880 in the home of Joseph McIntosh in Yellowsprings, Greene County, OH - was in Antioch college 1899 - d. date/place of death unknown Why #3 son was born in Yellowsprings is unknown as Tekarkana, AR was home. In 1881 Mary moved to Yellowsprings and raised 2 boys there. Her obit in paper notes she had cancer. Apparently surgeries performed on her shoulder took all her assets. .____________________________________ Military records checked twice - zero Pension records checked - zero (Mary's application found only) Contacted Masons in OH, MD, AR - no information Contacted Antioch - ET and Mary and sons were there Know there's a grave in Yellowsprings for both Checked for burial records - none Have not found school ET taught in or their records in Yellowsprings Have census records of 1870/1880 JED I taught at Antioch and coached there before going to medical school __________________________ Open to any suggestions on getting information on Edward T. Dave, I left out 3 words. It should have read, "...Lucian Elmer Hargrave, the son of an older brother of my greatgrandmother Catherine Hargrave-Lydy...". Sorry for the confusion. Russ
Russ, I have something wrong in my database. You say that Lucien and Catherine were siblings. I have her as a daughter of HHH. However he died in 1869 and Lucien wasn't born until 1873. There must be a generation missing there. Who is Lucien's father? Dave _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Dave- Yes, it is Fayette County, Ohio. This particular William Miller was 36 according to the 1880 census and Lucy was 35, so that would put them born in the 1840's. This has been a difficult line for me to track. I have had very limited success in finding information. One of the problems I have found is the court house burning down in Cincinnati. This is where Charles and Elizabeth were married and there is no marriage record, according to the court house. I have been unable to get a handle on Charles' parents names. There is a Family Bible, but it only has Charles and Elizabeth with their children listed and the record of their marriage. I believe one relation must have been in the Civil War as there was an unidentified picture of a gentleman wearing what appears to be a Union uniform, tucked into the back pages of the book. I think perhaps Charles' father, but who knows? Anyway, Thank you for your input. Kelly
Dave (et al), Guilty as charged! Indeed Lucian Elmer Hargrave, an older brother of my greatgrandmother Catherine Hargrave-Lydy, married Luella Gordon whose sister Emma had married George Alfred Miller of Greene Co, OH. S-o-o-o-o-o, I am connected. All the better I say! Thanks, Dave! Russ Ehler
Hi Russ and Dave :o) Thank you for your information. It is interesting to note, that Lawrence Miller's 1st wife's name was Edith Harper and it is my understanding, she was originally from Richmond, Indiana. She died about 1916, there abouts and Lawrence Miller's 2nd wife was Mary Bowermaster. Lawrence's siblings were: Elva May Howard W. Osa C. The only one I have information about, is Elva who married Frank Burr, who I understand, owned and/or operated a funeral home. Lawrence and Edith's children were: Etha Dona Robert Dean Max (this is my Grandfather) Perhaps some of these names help? The only other information I have is an 1880 census for Fayette County in a town called, Jasper. Apparently, that is where Charles Miller and Elizabeth Malsbary Miller lived after they married. In the same block they live, is another carpenter named William A. Miller and his wife Lucy. Though I have no definitive proof, I am almost certain they are related. Anyway, if this helps, let me know. Thank you. Kelly Miller-Collins
Kelly, I assume that the Fayette County you spoke of is in OH. Some of my line went to Fayette Co., IN. You mentioned a William Miller and wife Lucy. I am sure the ages are different, but I am looking for a William Miller, married to a Lucinda. William was born about 1800 and died in 1873, buried in Clifton, Greene Co., OH _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Howdy, folks: I wish I did have something to add because my forebears Herbert Hines Hargrave and his wife Millie Oliver homesteaded east of Bowersville in Silver Creek Twp and just SW of the river beginning about 1826 and raised 10 children there. I visited their grave and the graves of all their children who are either buried in the Stewart Cemetery in Bowersville or in the two Silvercreek Cemeteries up in Jamestown. Two of their children are buried at Kempton in Tipton Co, IN and I descend from one of those. Nevertheless the Hargrave children married a Latham, a couple of Thompson sisters, a couple of Lydy brothers, a Wilson, a Harper, a Glass, and a Kiger. I have no Millers in my database from this area. Would love to exchange data with anyone who connects. Best Wishes Russ Ehler
Ah, but you do Russ, the missing link is Gordon. Enos Neff Gordon had five children. One daughter married a Miller (my line) another married a Hargrave and a third married a Strong and her daughter married an Oliver. So you do tie in - I just don't know how but I believe you told me that Elizabeth Luella Gordon married Lucian Hargrave a grandson of HHH's who is your GGGrandfather. Kelly Miller mailed the list about her Charles and Lawrence Miller from the subject location. My Miller ancestors lived in this precise area. George C. Miller (1796- PA to 1882-Jamestown) However, I do not recognize her names. George's mother came as a widow to Greene Co. with seven little children. George C. Miller was one of them. Unfortunately, I do not know the names of all of his siblings. She settled in the Cedarville area first with the Stephens and Bromagems. I used to think there were no other Miller relatives living in Greene Co. I now am questioning that assumption. The Millers living east of the Little Miami River are potential relatives. Most came from Scotland as I now suspect my line did. Does anyone out there have anything to add?? Greetings List :o) I am researching my MILLER line, from an area called Silver Creek in Jamestown or by Jamestown in Greene County. Specifically, I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, Lawrence Miller, who was a blacksmith. He was born, 28 Sept. 1879 and died, 06 Feb. 1943. His father was Charles Miller, a carpenter by trade and his mother was Elizabeth Malsbary. If anyone has any recollections of his blacksmith shop, where it was located or how I might go about finding out more about him, I would love to hear from you. Thank you. Hello, maybe someone can help me with a little problem; I've just been surfing around a little and found that Patience STURDYVAN is listed as a Revolutionary War Ancestor and I'm wondering if anyone can provide more information. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohgccogs/revwarr.htm STURDYVAN Patience, 95 (that would be page#95 in the Revolutionary War Veterans of Greene County Ohio Index) Thank you, Marie And as Daddy used to tell me: "Don't worry about bitin' off more'n you can chew; your mouth is probably a whole lot bigger'n you think."
