Miami Twp. is one of the northern border twps and borders Clark Co. And the twp in Clark Co. that is bordering it is Green. Confusing yes! The two towns of the era were Clifton and Yellow Springs. The Census of 1860 should show your Martin is your looking at the right roll. I checked the index in my 1896 atlas and it indicated that the last twp was formed in 1858 so by 1860 boundary lines was pretty well set. The Library is closed, but if they looked for you then you must regroup and look again. Did he own land? Was he a farmer? There is an atlas for 1868 that they could check for you for a farm. Hi Folks, Hope you all had a nice fourth. Doesn't the 1860 census show all family members and not just heads of household? I have been chasing E.B. Martin for a long time and supposedly there is an E.B. Martin on the 1860 census on page 519 Miami Township for Greene County. Seems no one can find him in Greene County as I paid someone there to look in the Greene Room. I was born in Springfield but I don't know where Miami Twp is in Green Co. Now the above listing for him would be this Greene County or did the boundaries change? But then if that happened would it be listed as it was on a Federal Census Index?? Thanks Tootsie Shoemaker
Thank you everyone for the imput on census records. I thought going to the NARA would be helpful and it was in some cases, but in others, I just have more questions. Sure wish I could find that Anthony Miller m. to Suzanne Eckman. cbj ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, July 06, 2001 7:18 AM Subject: Re: [OHGREENE-L] MILLERS AND ECKMANS > Could I join this discussion about names and listing them for the census > takers? Looking for relatives of Rev. David D. Johnson, a Baptist minister who lived in or around Jamestown, Ohio from the 1850s' until his death in 1916. He pastored several churchs in the Greene, Madison, Fayette counties. He is credited with marrying over 800 people and burying 1000 during his ministry. Davids daughters married into the McKillip and Ford families of the area. Thanks David Johnson Lima, Ohio
Could I join this discussion about names and listing them for the census takers? I found Harvey Downey and his mother in 1860 by looking for his sister Rebecca Downey. The mother was remarried and all were living on the same farm as with first husband but listed under the new name McIntosh. Harvey was listed Downey, but not Harvey - the H was blurry and unreadable. I never would have found it if I hadn't gone after Rebecca. Harvey disappear again so in 1870 Census, I looked at McIntosh and thank God they changed the Census so we can look at the actual names, because there was Harvey, his new wife and baby all listed as McIntosh under the stepfather's name. So, it is a challenge!!! And I love the hunt. Linda Swaney Sabin
This type of problem was discussed on another email group. It appears that some people may have given the names of *all* their children rather than listing just the children who were living in the household. Some census takers may not have asked children clearly or the person giving the information misunderstood the question. So, it is not terribly uncommon that grown children living elsewhere were listed as living in the household of their parents. ~Suz In a message dated 7/5/2001 9:09:00 PM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << That is what I have too. Good evening Deborah, I would be glad to help you as much as possible but I know next to nothing on the Steens. My GrGrGrandfather Was William Good as I mentioned before; Abigail as she was called at that period of time was his wife & they had several children. They left Xenia & moved to Allen County Ohio & from there to Paulding, County Ohio.. I have always been told she was originally from Indiana ( God knows where ). Several Census's indicated she was also. William Good dumped her for another woman in the early 1860's & moved to Illinois where he produced another family of several children which I am a bi- product of. The other woman was his & Sarah's Daughter-In-Law & she is my GrGrGrandmother. None of the other Good's apparently was able to find out this or prove it, which I can. From what I have been able to find William & Abigail remained married clear up to each of their deaths.. Williams Civil War pension records tells this quite heavily... Will wait for your reply! That is what I have too. My dad gave me that info from stuff his cousin researched to get into the DAR, but if that is our ancestor, and then list of siblings I got with her are correct, then how could she and all those same siblings be listed in 1850 in her father's household. Either that info is correct and then people on the census are not mine even though every name matches that given to me for Suzanne, or the info that she used to get into the DAR is not correct. Maybe the Suzanne who m. Anthony Miller is not Jacob III's daughter at all! I even have copies of photos that have been handed down through the family that are supposed to be Suzanne and Anthony Miller. The more I learn the more questions I have. I guess that is the name of the genealogy game. Thanks for your response. cbj
The Ohio Geo. Society has some sort of cemetery book, but someone else had better address that one. I am within the county of my burials and just need footpower and the index for those cemeteries to get there.
NO, they list her as white, but what I have studied on native Americans, is that many who married whites denied being Indian because the discrimination against them back them was sometimes very serious. They couldn't get jobs. Often, they would be killed just because they were Indian. Also, census takers made errors. I have nothing else on her to compare.Tell me about your Downeys. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, July 05, 2001 6:24 AM Subject: Re: [OHGREENE-L] Carder > Concerning Elisabeth Carder, Cherokee, NC or VA in 1850 Census. Well,I don't know these names - but that sure is a lot for coincidence: My Frank Pickering would grow up to marry a Snyder (Bertha H.); her father, William, was born in 1861 or '62 - close enough to be a sibling of your Frank. What's more, Bertha's maternal grandmother was born a Beal/Beale/Beall. Hmm. I may need to cogitate on this. Hi Linda, You are probably correct. I think that this family lived at Beavercreek. I will check my records, and really appreciate that. The family that I am researching is the Thornhill family--Mallory Thornhill, and wife Tompsy, also several sons and wives, and perhaps even daughters. If there is anything on line, or even a Cemetery Book that I could buy that would be wonderful. Thanks for the reply. Concerning Elisabeth Carder, Cherokee, NC or VA in 1850 Census. What did they list as her color? Did the Census taker pick up on the Native American? I am wondering because of other notations I have noticed in the Xenia records over the years. We have a Downey family of African Americans in that period in Xenia City with similar family names of ours.
