I also would like a copy of the map but can you send it to [email protected]? Elizabeth
Linda, As Matthew Quinn is my ancestor, I would be interested in what information you had found that the Quinn family gravesite still exists. I have the above map in Tiff image format that I will be willing to send to anyone requesting it. It is 321 Kb. With Kodak Imaging For Windows, It can be shrunk down to occupy 1/8 of the screen or enlarged so much that one can write any amount of information on any survey and then shrink it to normal size. Hello, Monica..... I do research for hire in Greene County, Ohio. It would depend upon what you would want me to do. Let me know if I can help. Helen Ritenour
There is Upper Arlington cemetery in Lewisburg, OH - Preble Co. And by the way, I found Huston and Campbells in Preble Co. And I might have found a connection between the Michaels and Campbells to Badgley again. You guys can't get away from us can you cousin!!
Steve - If this is a person who was in the military, perhaps it is Arlington National Cemetery here in Virginia. Can anyone tell me if there is an Arlington Cemetery in either Greene or Montgomery Co.? I have an obit that lists the burial in Arlington Cemetery. Thanks, Steve
Hi All, With the mention of Bellbrook and newspapers I figured I would pass this along. The Bellbrook Library has a 4 volume scrapbook of clippings from the Bellbrook Moon from 1893 to abt 1909 I believe most of my research was in the 1893 and 1905 Volumes. Now many of you have seen this at the Greene Co. Library, but take a ride to Bellbrook and ask to see their copies. Unlike Greene Co. these are the original articles that have been Archived. I compared copies from Greene with what I saw at Bellbrook and you won't believe what can be missing some of the copies are missing whole lines. You have to ask to see these book they are not out in the general distribution areas. I hope this helps. Steve
I have joined the Ohio Historical Society and intend to join the local but can't decide if I should go Greene Co or Beavercreek. Seems that I should do Greene County since my Downey's 1833 farm is on Routzong Rd. near the line. I guess it will be saved from destruction by the gravel pits by being in Beavercreek Twp. I hear they are zoned out? There are signs up on all sides of many of the roads in Xenia Twp saying that they are to be gravel pits. I keep thinking about the family of Matthew Quinn graveyard which I think is up on a farm behind Orchard Lane on private property and all the other private ones and what will become of them. At one time I belonged to Preble Co. Historical Society, but being clear over here in Greene Co., I felt out of it. They laugh at our attitude about distance in Michigan. They go 40 or 50 miles to decorate graves and 25 miles for a good Sunday dinner. I am so spoiled! Linda
All I know is Daniel Vail & Phebe Smith Vail were parents of my GGG grandmother Phebe Vail Strong. I know they came to Greene Co. Ohio around Feb 1916 according a letter she left behind to her son. Barbara, If you don't have a Rachel Vail married to someone by E.B. Martin I guess we don't connect. I know this bunch was in Greene Co. at one time but maybe so short a time I won't find anything. My ggrandmother and her first cousin's birthdays were before Greene kept records I think. In the late 1900's my Aunt married a Edward W. Martin so if anyone knows him I would like to know. Thanks. I completely understand Townships as I born in Clark Co., lived in Greene Co. twice and raised in Logan County. I live in Michigan and they have townships. I also understand early newspapers. My Grandad and his brother were printers by trade and both were Editors and printers of their own newspapers. My Grandad had some neat stuff in the paper and would it never get in any paper today. That is how I know my Dad got a horse hit by a train and killed but he was okay. Grandad ended the article with this warning to all young men to be careful when out sowing their wild oats. His announcement of his brother's marriage would sound like a kidnapping today. Thanks all, Tootsie Shoemaker Tomlinson
Hi, I hope that someone connects to this family. I really hope that someone does. Descendants of Alfred H. Kephart 1 Alfred H. Kephart b: Abt 1886 Greene Co., OH +Pearl J. ??? b: OH 2 Donald W. Kephart b: Abt 1908 Greene Co., OH Hope to hear from someone. Have a good day. Mary Ross
I'd looked and looked for an online map showing townships and finally found one. The site address doesn't seem to work when cut and pasted, but you can find it on Cindi's List -Ohio: http://www.cyndislist.com/oh.htm Go to "Maps" then "American Memory Railroad Maps 1828-1900 - Ohio", then select map #6. It takes some manipulation to select the right target spot with the right zoom level, but this map shows townships, towns, railroads and other features. ~Suz
I have a scanned map of Greene County that shows the current townships and roads for anyone who wants it. It's a rather large file, but shows a lot of detail. If you have WinZip, let me know and I'll zip it to save some download time. Just email me [email protected] Linda, are you a member of the historical society? I haven't joined that yet, but spend a lot of time at the Greene Room doing look-ups. Are you familiar with a Robert M Martin who married Jane Rose in 1820 in Fairfield co., OH? Several of the Rose families moved to the Greene/Clinton Cos., OH area. Another thing - townships were the form of government when there was no central town or settlement. When we moved to Beavercreek Twp. in 1970, it was the largest Twp in Ohio. And had a good system of government. Then we became a city, but the city does the police and Beavercreek Twp, which is the part not in the city but still Twp, handles the fire for the entire area. Linda
Bellbrook was an early settlement. It also had a newspaper that Steve could explain better than I since he has been researching his family by it. As you know newspaper were little gossip sheets back in the beginning, telling births, deaths, weddings, parties, just everything. We had the Lewisburg Leader in the 40's and 50's in Lewisburg, Preble Co., when I was a girl and I loved to read it. But even by the fifties it was getting away from the really "chewy" information.
