Dear Springer list, The other day, on my lunchtime trip to the Cleveland Public Library, I was replacing an index volume for 1860 Ohio when I noticed six new volumes on the shelf below...and they turned out to be a 1999 set of indices for the 1870 Ohio census :) I immediately copied the numerous SPRINGER entries, and looked for the common ancestor of Jane Jackson, Chris Augustine, the late Reed Willson and myself: Garrett Springer. By 1870 he was on his second marriage (we four are descended from the first) and the index had TWO listings for him. The set of indices is terrific as it gives you the AGE of the main entry person, his or her state of birth, geneder, race and SPELLS OUT the county and township, followed by census roll number and page reference. Garret Springer on the index page had two almost indentical enteries. Age 55 w m, born NY, Geauga County, Chester Township, roll 1204 and pages 109 and 119. I went to the machine and to page 109. 23rd day of July 1870 Garrett, info above, Stone Mason Louisa [2nd wife] 34, f w, Tailoress, born Ohio Edwin G. [by first marriage] 23, m, w, Stone Mason, born Ohio Bertha E. 7 f w, born Ohio Sarah B. 4 f w Clarence 2 m w , born Ohio reeling to page 119 I found, to my amazement: an 1870 census form altered by slashing the final zero to allow the date to read 18th day of March 1871. Information was exactly the same. Al Dawson, Berea, Ohio - MA, History, UNC-Chapel Hill, 1973. "HAVE SPOOL, WILL UNRAVEL" Professional Services Available.
