    3. While reading about the Railroad information I thought about a set of drawings that I have hanging in my front hall. It is a set of three reproductions of a copper-plate etchings by Guido Gruenewal. (a well-known Viennese artist of the 1920's & 30's) They are three drawings of Chessie cat, her kittens and her "Old Man" Peake. There is also a story of Chessie and Chessie as a Kitten. My husband got these from his grandmother years ago but they were never out of the envelop until I had them matted and framed. They are very lovely drawings of the cats and the story is very interesting. My husband's grandfather ran Keener Sand & Clay in Gallia County and they used the Chessie System to ship the sand & clay to other parts of the state so he was always getting items from the company. I just wish we had some of the old calendars. It tells about how Guido was fascinated by cats and kittens and by using the difficult technique of copper-plate etching, he produce many prints of his family's pets in amusing poses and delicate colors. One is showing a sleepy keen in bed which was seen in 1933 by an officer of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. At that time, the C&O was trying to advertise the comfort of its new air-conditioned sleeping cars. An advertisement in the September issue of "Fortune" magazine that year (1933) had the etching with the slogan "Sleep like a Kitten" The following year the kitten known as "Chessie" appeared in the first of a continuous series of Chessie Calendars. The three etching in the collection I have is the 1933 Chessie kitten sleeping, Chessie and her kittens and Peake "Chessie's Old Man. There is more about how she became as famous as a movie star with people sending her gifts and asking for her photo and how people would send birthday cards to her every September 1. In a paragraph about the railroad it says that the Chesapeake and Ohio is now affiliated wit the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. In 1972, the partners adopted "Chessie System" as a new short-form name. This is an interesting piece about the railroad and cats but it is to long to put on the list so I just give you some of the highlights. It also tell about the painter Guido Gruenewald. Marjorie
