I found the following to be rather sad. It comes from the Gallipolis Journal August 10, 1865, at least they apparently caught the fellow. The company was mustered out July 25, 1865 at Knoxville, TN., it was only 11 days after being mustered out, and probably 9-10 days after arriving home. "John Spears, private in co. G, 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery, mustered out and paid off with the regiment, was robbed in Gallipolis on Saturday night [August 5] last, of about $225 in 'greenbacks.' He resides near Patriot, in this county, and by this robbery loses his earnings of the whole war. A man by the name of Johnson from that section of the county, quite an elderly man, has been arrested and lodged in jail, charged with the theft. His preliminary examination, leaves hardly a doubt of his guilt." A quick search of the census of 1860 shows a William Johnson aged 68 living in Perry Twp. The only others living in Perry were a 28 and 39 year old, so it was probably this William. Anything dealing with the 117th OVI A.K.A. 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery is of particular interest to me since these are the boys who served with my great grandfather.
