Range 15 Township 4, is Harrison Township Clay is Range 14 Township 2 Now looking at the Plot maps from the 1874 Gallia County Atlas, you will see that Section 5 is on the border of Clay and Harrison and Jacob Loucks owned the majority of it. By the way , this is a very handy book to have and is sold at the Gallia County Historical/Genealogical Society . It has plot maps of the various townships. To find the Range and Township number though I used the front of the book Gallia County , Ohio Residents 1800-1825. It has a very nice article, map and chart on how to determine the range and township numbers. It is also sold at the Gallia County Historical / Genealogical Society. Two books a researcher for Gallia County should definately own. John Gilmore (and Sally, his wife) sold 31 acres in this section to Mathias Angel in 1837. Would someone be willing to check the deed records to determine how John Gilmore acquired this 31 acres? Some years ago I copied some Gilmore deeds but didn't realize that one day I would to know how John came into that piece of property :) Thanks very, very much for any advice! Cheryl, Thanks for replying. I have copies of the 1874 plot maps, and maybe that's where some of the confusion starts for me. There are multiple numbers in many of the sections. Jacob Loucks section is labeled as "5", but if following the traditional numbering system, it looks as though he would be in number "10", with the section at the bottom right of Harrison township [directly below Jacob Loucks section] clearly labeled as "7". Also, the land description for the transfer from John Gilmore to Mathias Angel mentions "thirty-five lengths distance to the west bank of Raccoon Creek". According to the 1874 Gallia Co. maps, Big Raccoon Creek flowed through Harrison Twp. Section 12 and Clay Twp. Section 5. Is there possibly a "Little" Raccoon Creek that I am over-looking?
