Can someone confirm if property lying in Range 15, Township 4, Section 5 is in Clay Township? John Gilmore (and Sally, his wife) sold 31 acres in this section to Mathias Angel in 1837. Would someone be willing to check the deed records to determine how John Gilmore acquired this 31 acres? Some years ago I copied some Gilmore deeds but didn't realize that one day I would to know how John came into that piece of property :) Thanks very, very much for any advice! Sheri Culler

If so he is my 3rd great grandfather and I would appreciate any data you might have .............. Charlie, I think your John is possibly an uncle of my John, (the one mentioned in this deed). I have a copy of another deed that calls John "of Mathew of Clay". Mathew Gilmore lived in Monroe County in 1820, then in Harrison Twp of Gallia Co. in 1830. The "tax duplicate" of 1835 says Mathew was taxed for land in Clay Twp, but I have no other proof of any land ownership for Mathew. The deed mentioned in my first message includes a description of "thirty-five links to the west bank of Raccoon Creek. Part of Raccoon Creek seems to lie in Section 5 of Clay Twp. It also runs through the top section of Harrison, but that appears to be numbered "12". It also mentions "Sally" as the wife of John. My John married Sarah Trotter. Back to your John, I think he could have been a brother to Mathew, thus making our Johns uncle and nephew. Your John was born about 1793, and Mathew born between 1785 and 1790. Both were born in PA. I have been trying to sort out these Gilmores and have started entering your John into a database, hoping that would help me see clues better. I'll be happy to send you what I have when ready, though most of it is not documented. [Was sent to me by another researcher]. I have been trying to gather census info for more clarification. I work again tomorrow and family coming for the day , so it will be several days before I can get back to you.
