I was told about a year ago by the cemetery chair for the Ohio Genealogical Society that there are more reported cemeteries in Gallia County than in other county in the state of Ohio....over 500. Ross County was second in line. Part of this may be that we made every effort to find them all when we first censused them....asking farmers who knew their land, hunters, looking at old lists, using topo maps, etc. This was back in the 1970's and early 1980's. Some of the stones copied then no longer are legible today. So, the preservation of the record was well worth it. Another reason for so many is that there are many, many small cemeteries all around the county on private land. Yes, it is amazing! My family has 2 cemeteries there. The Bing cemeteries. They are now deserted though and no Bings remain to care for them. I looks like Gallia County has done a great job in identifying and documenting Gallia County cemeteries. Over 500. Wow. But, are we saying that establishing and enforcing laws to protect graveyard peripherys is impracticable if not impossible? More specifically, what can be done to get rid of the auto junk yard bounding Ewington Cemetery in Huntington Township? It looks like the cemetery and the junk yard are in somebody's backyard. Does that mean they own the cemetery (and its inhavitants) and can do anythine they want to do with it? And can deny access to it? I would say you should go to the township trustee first and see if they can help with it.
