I am looking for my Great-great grandfather, James Madison Gates' service records. I read in the Laidley book about Charleston, WV, that he went there when what is now Charleston was Kanawha Court House, VA, before the War began. Some references say he was in the Union Army and may have been a drummer. They say at least two of his brothers were there with him and that when he and a brother enlisted, one was left in charge of the JM Gates and Brother store he began. The company lasted over 100 years and The Gates Paint Company was the largest paint and plate glass business in the region for all those years. He lived in Gallipolis, where he is said to have been born, in the 1840 Census, being only 2 years old, and 1850 Census, at age 12, where his father Moses was 52 and a very wealthy blacksmith, as was his brother Daniel Haskell Gates, who was 24. His other brothers in 1850 were John, aged 20, and George, aged 12. He is also listed in the 1860 Census at age 24. His father, Moses, had died, now Daniel Haskell Gates was the head of the family with all the wealth and was also POSTMASTER. Brother Virgil was now the Blacksmith and George was the ASST. POSTMASTER (who says nepotism isn't a good thing? ha ha) Anyway, something took all these young men away from Gallipolis-was it the War? Most of them ended up in Kanawha and Putnam Counties, VA, now WV. Any help with the service records would be very much appreciated. Thanks so much!
