I have the early Gallia County marriage books and I can't find what I'm looking for. What I'm looking for is information on a Matilda Carter who married a Mr. Monroe. Matilda is the daughter of James Carter, and *possibly* a sister to a Nancy Carter. I bring this up only on the grounds that after Matilda died he married a third time to Nancy Carter. I believe this marriage probably took place in West Virginia. Matilda is a relatively unusual name. Here she is in the 1900 census with two of her children 14 years apart, both with the surname Monroe. Monroe, Matilda A. Head W F July 1856 age 43 wd. Mother of four children -- three living. Matilda was born in Ohio, her father was born in Ohio and her mother was born in New Jersey. She is listed as a farmer, and owns her own farm free of mortgage. Her oldest son Henry W. S M Sept.1875 age 24 S b. West Virginia, both parents born in Ohio, and he's a farm laborer. Her other son is Herbert W. W M Oct. 1889 age 10 S b. West Virginia, both parents born in Ohio, and he's a student. By the 1910 census John and Matilda are living together on Tick Ridge Road in Harrison Twp. No children, so Herbert must have grown up and gotten married, or decided to stay with his brother Henry W. Does anyone know anything more about this particular family? About these Carters or these Monroes? Thanks! Linda Trent [email protected]
