HANGING ROCK IRON REGION OF OHIO, pg 552, PUBLISHED IN 1916: EARLY SCHOOLS, EDUCATION & LEGISLATION: A school had been started at Oak Hill, or rather near Samsonville, by an old man named Parks Dear in 1819. This was a Baptist school and the conflict then raging between the Baptist led by Levi McDaniel and the Methodist led by Gabriel McNeal led the latter to organize a school in Northeastern Jefferson, which he taught himself a part of the time.
