Hello and thank you I think I will visit this Friday morning and I am coming from Wheelersburg what is the best way to come there since I have never been to Gallia co before I put the address in mapquest genealogy society 57 court street and it brought up another place may have been the old society? so how would I travel from here thanks Shirley
Shirley, Just kinda depends what kind of roads you want to take. I'm assuming you mean Wheelersburg, Scioto County, Ohio. You have two options -- Coming in from the North: To cut off the hump of the River you could take 140 over to Hitchcock (or really just south of Hitchcock), then go north on 93 to Oak Hill, and from Oak Hill cut across on 279 to 35 and come in on 35. This is the shortest way, though may be the longest in time because the roads aren't near as good. Going through Gallipolis from Rt. 35 to the center of town seems like an eternity, but you will get there. :-) As you near Court Street you'll see a Little Ceasar's Pizza on the left, and Grace United Methodist Church on the right, the US Post Office on the right, and then State Street (one side of the town square). Court Street is the next street and you want to go right (away from US Bank or whatever their name is this week <grin>). The Genealogical Society is about half way up the first block on the left. Coming in from the South: Or you could just stay on the River 52N and follow it till it turns into Rt. 7, which runs right into Gallipolis. And this is the longer way, but probably the shortest in time. Stay on Rt. 7 N all the way into Gallipolis. You'll pass St. Rte. 218 coming in from the left, continuing on 7 you'll enter a little community of Lower Garfield, and 7 will wind around a bend and Willis Funeral Home will sit at the junction of 7 and 141. Continue on 7 and you're entering downtown proper. You'll come to Grape Street with Tope Furniture on the Right and Foodland on the left. The next street should be Court. There's an excellent map of downtown Gallipolis online at http://tinyurl.com/ytfm5z Also don't forget the Historical and Genealogical Society that is located just around the corner from the Genealogical Society on Second Ave. (Rt. 7). Bossard Library is about three blocks from the societies, the court house about two.
