My great grandfather died in Gallia County without a will in 1863. State law then decides how the estate is divided. Generally the wife's dower amounts to about one-third, and then two-thirds is divided among the children. Even with no will there should be probate records. I wrote to the probate court and obtained the complete probate records, which contained a wealth of genealogical material. That was one of the proofs that proved my descent that allowed me to join First Families.
