    3. Listers, If you are in need of an obituary to be looked up remember this, the newspapers on microfilm are not indexed , therefore you need an approximate date, fot finding the article. The index book to marriages and deaths in newspapers that was published is not conclusive. Even if you get within the month, it isn't asking too much to be able to find it, but if you only have a year or a span of years it makes it hard to find. If this is the case we have a couple of options, one is to look into the death record books that were published by the genealogical society. The other is to search through the books at the courthouse to find the date. You might be able to find a more definate date going through this proceedure. I also want to say that sometimes even if you have a good date, there may not be an article at all. Obits cost the family and that was an added expense. In some cases we may find that the obit is included with the area's new report. The Gallipolis papers had ladies that would write a bit of news from their area and submit it. So , the obit could be a line in one of these personal columns...... example. I found only a mention of my grandfather's death.....it said "Many people attend today the funeral of Mr. Thomas. " It was the correct date and the column was from the Bidwell area in which he was living at the time.... When I look up obits I try to find out if the person was from a certain rural area... and then look for mention there. Don't give up trying, just try for a more precise date and those of us who do that kind of help will have a little easier time.
