    3. Sue, The Gallipolis newspapers are back to 1828 at least if not farther back. I will be at the library all day tomorrow doing research on microfilm. I can see if they put anything about him. The newspapers back then were not so news worthy as you might think.. But I will give it a try . I know that their paper, the Ironton Register, did not start until 1852. I do know that Washington County, Ohio, did have a newspaper that started even before 1800. I'm not sure when the Gallia newspapers started. I hope that this helps a little. - Jean -----Original Message----- From: S Edwards [mailto:suze2300@yahoo.com] Sent: Friday, March 25, 2005 6:18 AM To: OHGALLIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [OHGALLIA-L] 1848 - Newspapers in the area I am looking for information on a death/accident that occured in Dec, 1848. Giles S. Case drowned in the Ohio River under mysterious circumstances. He was a ferryman on the Ohio River, probably residing in Addison Township. In Dec 1848, a stranger came to the house and wanted to be taken across the river. Giles' young wife, Clarissa McAboy, didn't want him to go. He left her a gold coin (still in the family) for good luck, and never returned. With the spring thaw, his body was found washed ashore on an island in the River (near Gallipolis, I believe). The boat and the stanger's (or his body) were never found. Giles was the son of Luther Case and Chloe Sisson. Luther died in 1829, Chloe married twice after that - Robert Young (abt 1831) and Phineas Mathews (1839). Any help with additional information on this incident would be greatly appreciated. Giles was my ggg-grandfather. Thank you, SueEd NY __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
