    2. Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson Athens Messenger February 7, 1889 GALLIA The stockholders of the Gallia creamery, which put out 35,000 pounds of gilt edged butter last year, expect to double their business this year. The creamery has been a complete success in Gallia county. About twenty years ago while some Eastern capitalists were boring for coal on the farm of John Varney, near Rio Grande, Gallia county, at the depth of about 840? feet they struck natural gas, which escaped with great pressure until the tubing fell down beyond reach. Since that time the gas escapes in the waters of the Raccoon. When the creek is frozen in other places there are always openings where the gas escapes and skaters frequently fire the escaping gas.
