    3. Shelby, I went to Shirley Plantation last May when I went on vacation with a friend. I talked to the Carter family that lives and maintains the plantation.| The older Carter living their is 86 years old. I left my card and said if they found anything about our Gallia County John or the older man remembered to please drop me a line. They have no idea about any of their history. The tour guide probably knows more than them. I had a book about Carter's and I believe, just my opinion, that John/Mary Lehr Carter is the son of William Carter who squander the family fortune when he had a chance. This was brought out about him (William) in the Tour. This book said that William had 2 sons that were named in his mother's will. One of them was a John. I figure that John couldn't stand the reputation his father had given the name. John seemed to be an alright fellow, marrying Mary Lehr the way he did. But I just think that he came west to escape the bad name of his father.
