Vernon Northup was born in 1781, probably in VA. He moved with his family from Virginia to Ohio about 1795 when he was about age 14. Vernon married Elizabeth Ewing on December 24, 1812 in Gallia Co., OH, and they had at least 2 daughters, born in 1814 & 1815, and another child (sex unknown) who died at age 50 hours. All are buried in the Rose Cemetery, Green Twp., Gallia Co., OH. In the Gallia County Chancery Records on Nov. 21, 1849 the following court case was discussed: ELIZABETH NORTHUP VS. VERNON NORTHUP AND OTHERS, Alimony. Elizabeth said they were married about 36 years ago and have amassed 300 acres and a brick house. Vernon left in 1838, wandered about Tennessee and Illinois, leaving behind debts and judgment which Elizabeth and a son, now deceased, paid off. Vernon came back, arranged sale of property to menagers (managers?) and left for Illinois. Said to be out of his right mind. Vernon admits marrying Elizabeth and said he lived a dog's life every since. Came home in 1841, stayed as long as he could stand it. Went to Quincy, Ill. hear where his brother, Henry L. Northup lived, to find a place. Came back has been living at home at Elizabeth's request. Avers he's sane, although has suffered enough to make a wise man mad. Dismissed. Vernon Northup died on March 10, 1850, probably in Gallia Co., OH. I'm not sure who the Henry above is - there is a Henry L. Northup living in Quincy, Adams Co., IL in 1850, but he is only 37 so was not Vernon's older brother Henry Northup. _Notes for Vernon Northup_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~knorthup/Webpage2/Max/Northup/Notes/VernonNorthup.htm) Hampton Northup Hampton E. Northup was born on I took that information from Kari Northup's web site _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~knorthup/_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~knorthup/) I can do some research later and come up with the name of the son who helped Elizabeth pay off Vernon's debts. Other info that I have seen indicates he ,Vernon, died without heirs. Vernon was one of the six children of Daniel and Anna Hampton Collins Northup. I am a direct descendant of Daniel and two of his children, Eliz. Jane and Thomas.
