Thank you, Henny, that was very nice of you to think of my Baltzell inquiries. So, it would seem that Daniel and Margaret (unknown surname, does anyone know another surname I can add to my genealogy?) Baltzell would be in the First Families category and they got there from Virginia, since that is where Harriet was born, according to every Census record until she died in Charleston, WV at a ripe old age. It seems this information represents a "Life Estate" situation, whereby the property deed is conveyed, but the former owner can live there until he also dies. Is that correct? Of general interest to all on this list, it would be great to know exactly what a "Garden Lot" is. I guess Harriet Baltzell Gates and her husband, Moses Gates, owned a lot and Harriett's brother, Thomas (and wife?) also owned a lot. Is this an old plat of the town of Gallipolis? Who laid it out and when? Does anyone know what is located there now? When I go to Gallipolis on my next trip up north, I would like to see the area where the Gates and Baltzell ancestors lived. I would also like to know where Daniel Baltzell was born (Maryland?) and if he had any contemporaries in his family who lived in Gallipolis township. Where in Virginia was Harriet Baltzell Gates born? Thanks so much to anyone who knows more about these queries. Sharon Lee Gates GATES, BALTZEL In a message dated 3/28/2005 12:01:30 P.M. So, when I was at the court house I took a look at Daniel Baltzell's deeds and found two of interest. In 1837 Daniel and wife Margaret sold to son Thomas Baltzell for $500 part of garden lot 16. Then in 1839 Daniel alone, which implies to me that Margaret had died, sold to Harriet, wife of Moses Gates, for $100 lot 17 except for 33 feet already sold to Thomas Baltzell and also "in consideration of a certain Bond or obligation bearing ? dates herewith, for one thousand dollars, executed by the said Moses Gates, conditioned for my maintenance during my natural life, the receipt of which I hereby knowledge".... Then Harriet would have "her heirs and assigns as an estate of inheritance in fee simple forever" which simply means the property is hers. Nothing here tells me that Harriet is his daughter, but it does show Thomas is definitely a son and that Margaret was Daniel's wife and that she had died between 1837 and 1839. It shows that Moses and Harriet Gates will be taking care of Daniel the rest of his life and that Thomas and Harriet now own adjoining lots once owned by Daniel and Margaret. Yes, Sharon, there was a definite agreement to take care of Daniel. Garden Lots were in town, lots mostly along the river. There are some old plats which I believe show the numbered lots. I did not follow Thomas' land through to see if he and a wife sold it. I will try to look at it for you. I know there is a map of the garden lots at the court house but I think I know where to find it without going back there. The town was laid out by 1795 when they drew to see who would get what. River lots were more expensive. Henny >
