    2. The copyright warning that I put on the top of the posts of "old" newspaper articles is just to protect my time, work, and name of my postings. It is NOT the material I post nor will it ever be. I suggest that people on this list subscribe to an "old" newspaper site for perusal of the articles since this list does not appreciate others work. 3. Yes, your work is truly appreciated - even by those of us who don't find anything pertaining to our families. Please don't give up. I love to do extractions and finding information about the area, people and times..if we don't preserve the past we shall lose it! Don't let a little rain on your parade dampen your spirit and good work. - Marge in Eugene, OR -----Original Message----- From: JAR422@aol.com [mailto:JAR422@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 09, 2005 8:15 AM To: OHGALLIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA-L] Copyright laws The copyright warning that I put on the top of the posts of "old" newspaper articles is just to protect my time, work, and name of my postings. 3. At the risk of backlash..... I suggest it inaccurate to say this list "does not appreciate others' work". None of us would be anywhere in our research without the help of others and we know it. We all are aware of the time and work involved in researching history. It seems to me that searching newspapers is more time consuming than just about anything else. I haven't been here as long as many others and I don't pretend to speak for anyone else, but I haven't seen a disclaimer worded quite so strictly. Honestly, it puzzled me, and it apparently raised the interest of many here. Obviously it cultivated an interest in copyright law. I wouldn't take any of that personally, Joyce. A healthy discussion of copyright law leads to better understanding. Better information, better understanding. While perhaps no one fully understands copyright law, this can only help people respect the rights of others and protect those who do the work. I don't know anyone here who would intentionally steal another's work, but I suggest this discussion has helped minimize the "honest mistakes" of copyright infringement. ------- Anyway, my thought on this.... I would think it to be tenuous to claim a copyright over an email sent to a listserve. A 'thing' is copyrighted as soon as you write it but it be that it has to be meant as a work of art, or writing, or whatever [in this case, a compilation]. Seems to me that this was Joyce's intent. Copyright claims on emails to a listserve may be tenuous, but that Joyce meant/intended her series of emails to be a compilation seems obvious. 3. Joyce, please continue your hard and valuable work transcribing these newspapers. Do you happen to know if there were any newspapers in Gallia County in the 1840-1850 time period? Pam

    3. > Do you happen to know if there were any newspapers in Gallia County in the > 1840-1850 time period? Hi Pam, The Ohio Historical Society has the following Gallia County papers on microfilm. Some of them are also located at Bossard Library in Gallipolis, and some are not. These are listed in the newspaper microfilm available at the OHS, some of these cannot be purchased and cannot be interlibrary loaned. Trust me Becky Carroll and I tried are best :-) I've not found the Gallia County papers to be on Ancestry yet. If they ever get up there I will have to subscribe to it :-) Is there anything in particular you're looking for? I can't make any promises, but I do live in Gallia County, and I frequent Bossard :-) Linda Trent lindatrent@zoomnet.net GALLIA COUNTY Gallipolis Tribune (Gallia) Date: 1890-1940 Gallipolis Bulletin (Gallia) Date: 1868-1919 Gallipolis Journal (Gallia) Date: 1832-1918 Gallipolis Dispatch (Gallia) Date: 1861-1868 Vinton Gallia Republican (Gallia) Date: 1855-1855 Gallipolis Gallia Courier (Gallia) Date: 1853-1853 Gallipolis Buckeye & Gallipolis Journal (Gallia) Date: 1834-1834 Gallipolis Buckeye (Gallia) Date: 1834-1834 Gallipolis Gallia Phoenix (Gallia) Date: 1831-1832 Gallipolis Gallia Gazette (Gallia) Date: 1819-1829 Gallipolis Gallia Free Press (Gallia) Date: 1825-1825

    3. Hi Linda, I'm looking for some kind of evidence of Sanford York's death. A living cousin I found who descended from one of his other children, had a great-aunt that said that he died in Gallia County. We have not been able to find any record of him being there after June of 1840, when he married Hannah Varney. I truly appreciate any help you can give.
