.Just a suggestion for all members of this list, the Society or anyone with any information; if you have copies of any part of the missing files, please make copies and send them to the Genealogical and Historical Society in Gallipolis. If everyone works together with files our families have compiled, wills, etc., we can once again have a complete, secure source of reference. Regarding prosecution, yes, I am fairly certain that they could be prosecuted. In cases of burglary, the police tell people to check pawn shops and e-bay. E-Bay has a record of the Sellers and the information on the Seller can be obtained. Rather than be guilty of trafficking of stolen goods, most sellers will divulge the name of the source of the items for sale. The organization or person from whom the material has been stolen could prosecute once the items have been positively identified.
Denise, This would certainly help in restoring the original file. Also, having another copy of everyone's family history located at the Gallia County Historical/Genealogical Society would safeguard all the hard work put into collecting data. This is a good idea since family information can be destroyed by fires and other disasters, storing family data in a second location is just smart. . We now have 5 bookshelves of family histories and would gladly purchase more bookshelves to store a copy of everyone's hard work.
