    3. Remember when researching your early pioneers that they followed what "highways" they had and there is a great one between Charleston and Gallipolis, the Kanawa River and the Ohio River. Many of the early settlers came from Columbiana County, which I think might have been a stopping off place en route down the river, some stayed a generation or two and then the younger ones followed the river on down...... Even from Washington County, Pa, one might think going overland would be easier, and it would be by today's standards, but "in the day" it was easier from there to follow the river highways...... My Ward ancestors came from Columbiana County, Ohio, it took me quite a while to figure out that Columbiana was as you said, a stopping off place before coming on down the river. I later found they were from Pennsylvania.
