    1. [OHGALLIA] Jackson Hughes & Laviniah I. ASH and/or Matilda 'Milley' EAGLE
    2. Judy Cornick
    3. Hi Connie, Thanks for all the additional information.... Got a question... concerning this paragraph..... "The book lists one wife for Jackson. I am not saying he only married once, only that the book lists one wife. According to the book Jackson and Lavinia had Margaret, Thomas, Peter, Calvin, Milton, Polly, Silas, Levi and William. Wm. date of birth was abt 1841, the youngest and Margaret the oldest was born 1824 in Harrison Co. VA/WV." Margaret, Thomas, Peter, Calvin, Milton, Polly, Silas, Levi and William. Wm. date of birth was abt 1841, the youngest and Margaret the oldest was born 1824 in Harrison Co. VA/WV) If these children are Jackson's.... something isn't right.. If Margaret, their oldest child was born in 1824... that would make Jackson 11 years old when she was born... Is it possible the kids are Jackson's siblings instead of his children....??????? Judy C. 2. Teresa M. Herrmann
    3. Under the name Clendenin Hughes you wrote [male? Female?]. Clendenin was a boys name at that time, I know because it's in my family tree [along with the Hughes people] and Clendenin was a famous last name in our family tree from West Virginia, a name attributed to boys at that time. I have hundreds of Clendenin's in that line and they were all boys. Teresa Herrmann Columbus, Ohio That's MY little contribution to the story :]

    1. [OHGALLIA] Fwd: Oregon Trail - Abraham and Barbara Haptonstall III
    2. Jerry, Oregon Trail was listed on Rootsweb as the site of Barbary Eagle's marriage to Abraham Haptonstall III. Their marriage was on April 5, 1809 in Greenbrier County, Virginia. I found this in a book that listed early Greenbrier, Virginia marriages. They were married when they moved to Gallia County with the main Eagle family. 1. Re: [OHGALLIA] Levi Hughes
    2. Connie Schumaker
    3. Judy, First Judy, thanks for including Sarah Abigail's surname Jackson. I accidently left her surname out. The book I have gives the following on William born VA 1680-1697 died 1767 Hampshire Co., VA Will dated Dec 30, 1762 -- probated 9 Jun 1767 Part of his will, a history of Wm including possible parents but not documented are in the book. Wife's name is not proven only a possible, Sudna, with a note this "name is repeated frequently in his descendants." Sudna is one of the names my Wm Cottrell and Rachel Hughes used as well. They [Wm Hughes and unknown wife] had 9 children. Two of which you listed -- Hugh, Thomas [my line], William, Evan, Mary, Sudna, Sarah, and Ellis. It includes dates and spouses for some. Then it goes into history of each of William's children with about a page and half on Hugh and a little on Jonathan and his family. Less depth on the children of Jonathan other than names, birth dates, and wives names. The book lists one wife for Jackson. VA/WV. I think I mentioned that I had not gone thru the whole book. I looked at it more closely this morning and see that it goes into way more detail on the children of Thomas, then it seems to follow all the children of Jesse and his descendants in detail. Only guessing but I bet the author is a descendant of Jesse and his wife Grace Tanner. There is no date of death for either Jackson or Lavinia listed. The documentation for Jackson's children and those of his siblings is: Hacker's Creek Journal 3:36, 66-68, Ancestral File, Fam. Hist. Lib. Salt Lake City, Utah submitted by Suzanne Morgan Siders of Apple Valley CA. There is an address if you would like that let me know. Dates for Jackson in this book are b. 1790/1800 d 1874 No date of death listed for Levi There was another Jonathan listed. He was a son of Elias, son of Thomas. This Jonathan, son of Elias, was bn 14 Jan 1796 in Harrison Co. OH md Lovina Davis. I have not researched the Wm/Hugh/Jonathan line -- only my direct line Wm/Thomas/Jesse/Rachel. I can't say the information in this book is correct, I can only list what the book has. The book was published in 1999. You might be able to get a copy of it or the one on the Hughes of Gallia Co. thru inter-library loan. I purchased the one I have from AbeBooks.com. I just checked and they don't have another copy of the book I have or the one that was mentioned earlier on the Hughes of Gallia Co., OH. Hope this will help as leds to locations where to look for additional information. Connie

    3. I have no idea what is correct on Jonathan Hughes but I have seen Alfred Hughes' work. The same person who sent that to me, Everett Cherrington Hughes, also sent me an article, "Hughes Family Pioneers Blazed Forest Trails, Fought Indians, French, British" by Wilbur C. Morrison. No date, no source. In it he states that Jonathan Hughes, son of Thomas Hughes, Sr., was born in 1753 in Hardy County, WV, then part of Hampshire Co., VA and his wife was Sarah Abigail Jackson. He was an Indian spy with John Ewing and also served in the Revol. War. He came to Gallia Co. later. Jonathan had a brother Jesse Hughes. Jackson had a son Anderson Hughes who lived and married in Gallia Co. There is no mention of a Hugh Hughes but as this is absolutely not my research I can not even guess as to who is correct. 3. One of the post said Levi Hughes was 74 when he passed away. If this is the Levi we are talking about ... it would make him born abt. 1827 (instead of Feb 1836 in another post) ... Levi Hughes' father, Jackson Hughes' dates are b 22 Jul 1814 & died 31 Aug 1888. If age 74 death age for Levi Hughes is correct... his father, Jackson would have be age 14 when Levi was born... ?? If Levi's dates are Feb 1836 - 3 Jul 1901 is correct... he would have been abt. 65 yrs. old at his death. 2. Debbie, Ancestry.com listed Jackson Hughes, son of Jonathan Hughes and born 1801 died 1884 in Jay County, Indiana. There is a Levi Hughes listed in the Lovisa Hughes household in Springfield Township in 1850. Lovisa was also known as Lavinah Ash. I'm sure they knew the Glassburns. I'm pulling Jackson, husband of Matilda out of that family until I can find his true parents. I'm sure both Jacksons are related but how? Do you have any ideas on the father of your Jackson, maybe I could find him that way. I haven't read the whole book since my Hughes line ended when Rachel md. Wm. Cottrell. I am not 100% positive that the index is a complete index. It's about 20 pages and that isn't too large for the size of this book. Connie

    3. Mary, I have the book "The Hughes Family From Virginia to Oregon" by Patty Barhell Myers. It begins with William Hughes and goes on to include your Levi Hughes b. in VA 1838 md. Mary L. Eagle b. Gallia Co. abt 1839. He is in this book as a son of Jackson Hughes b. 1790/1800 d. 1874 M. Apr 22, 1821 Lavina/Lavinah I. Ash b. Jan 16, 1800 dau of Christopher Ash. I have the names and date for the other children of Jackson and Lavina if you want those. Levi Hughes was the son of Jackson Hughes Lavina Ash, who was son of Jonathan Hughes and Sarah Abigail, son of Hugh Hughes, son of William Hughes. The book has lots more details on each of these families. My Hughes line is William thru his son Thomas [brother to Hugh Hughes] and then thru Jesse Hughes [son of Thomas] and Grace Tanner's dau. Rachel Hughes who married my 3rd great grandfather Wm. Cottrell in 1794 in Harrison Co., VA/WV. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with on the Hughes line.
