Hi, All, Does anyone have any information on John Fletcher Cherrington, born around 1860. I have found him in the 1870 and 1880 Springfield Township census records with his parents, Wesley and Susan Cherrington, and then he disappears. The 1880 census says he is a teacher. I haven't been able to locate him in Gallia County cemetery records either. If anyone has any clues, I would appreciate the assistance. Thanks, Wilma Thaxton
Thanks, I did that. -----Original Message----- From: ohgallia-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ohgallia-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Debbie Alley Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 7:59 PM To: ohgallia@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA] birth records 1894-1903 check for a possible mispelled surname take care, Debbie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Kay Clark" <shrinkingmary@comcast.net> To: <ohgallia@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 8:43 PM Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA] birth records 1894-1903 > Can anyone tell me how complete these records are? The only problem, is that you have to verify what's on death certificates. Remember it's NOT the person filling it out, but a family member, who may or may not know who their parents were. I've had probably about 1/3 of the death certificates have the wrong parent's names on it. You wouldn't believe how many wife's and or husbands don't have a clue who their wife's or husband's relatives were. For years my family listed the wrong Frasier's as parents for their Grandfather, because, his much older brother raised him and out of respect he called him "father", so his wife thought that was biologically so. What confusion in the tree that caused. Also, my Grandmother wrote the wrong mother for her mother when she died because she was so shook up and upset that she forgot her name and wrote the wrong one. You just can't always be sure. Birth certificates are better because they are usually filled out by the parents themselves. I always like to verify on the Ancestry [or Historical Society] newspapers, because at least that helps somewhat. So do Military records where the father has to write the names and birthdates of all his children to receive his benefits. The bad news is that the birth may never have been reported. Although the state of Ohio "required" it back then, I don't think I've ever worked a line from that era where I found a birth record for each child. I don't have a clue why that's true, but I suspect it has something to do with home births that are unattended by a doctor or midwife. Heck, I finally located a birth record from the early 1940s out of Scioto County that was so far off that the person who was born hadn't ever been able to get a copy of it until some nice person in the recorder's office let me prowl through the cards myself. In that case, the doctor happened to be an alcoholic and didn't always get "minor details" right when he completed his paperwork. I love genealogy. :) Mary Kay Clark wrote: > Thanks, I did that. > > -----Original Message----- > From: ohgallia-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ohgallia-bounces@rootsweb.com] > On Behalf Of Debbie Alley > Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 7:59 PM > To: ohgallia@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA] birth records 1894-1903 > > check for a possible mispelled surname > take care, Debbie > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Mary Kay Clark" <shrinkingmary@comcast.net> > To: <ohgallia@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 8:43 PM > Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA] birth records 1894-1903 > > > >> Can anyone tell me how complete these records are? I agree with you, which is why I've been looking for more and different kinds of information on several people. I've come across some information provided on death certificates through the years that make me wonder what planet the kid was living on while growing up! I knew birth records would be one way to get more verification, and marriage bonds can provide more clues, too, but I haven't found any mention of those around Gallia and Lawrence. Do they exist? Trust me, I've been researching for over 30 years, so I sometimes drive myself and everybody else crazy with my search for more documenation. I'm just fairly new to research in Gallia, Lawrence, Jackson, and Muskingum counties. My biggest problem is that I'm now working on people who were at or near adulthood by the time they and their families moved to Gallia and Lawrence counties in the 1840s and 1850s. The farther back you go, the less documentation is out there in the world to find. I think I'm also working lines where people had a strong desire to keep a low profile for some reason. Teresa M. Thank you! I may dig around in those early marriage records, especially for Lawrence County. What's posted on the Lawrence County Register site doesn't give enough information to be useful. :( Teresa M. Thank you for the offer, but what I want to do is "snoop"! As I get deeper into researching a couple of lines, I'm beginning to suspect I could turn up some interesting connections if I could just scan listings, especially for marriages and deaths. I guess I should go back to my other idea, which to was order film from the FHC and see what, if anything, turns up. I was hoping Ancestry offered the chance to simply look through listings, like I used to be able to do in the old days within a courthouse. Oh, well. Thanks anyway, and I will keep your offer in mind in case I have reason to think of some specific thing I'm looking for. Almost every one of my families kept shifting back and forth across that county line, too, so that just adds to the awkwardness of knowing where to search. Beth, I subscribe to Ancestry.com. I have used it a lot. All the information I have accessed is based on an individual's name. So, if the Ancestry records include birth, death, or marriage information, you can see where the event occurred.
