As the name Pennel did not appear in the family before my ancestor, at least as far as I can tell, I often wondered if he was named for a Rev. Pinnall who was preaching near where they were in VA. Henny David Stewart <david@SurfTheWeb.com> wrote: Well that confirms we are very distant related. I see why I had not seen Pennel Cherrington's name, being from a second wife those children did not show on familysearch.org. I wondered if Pennel was a family name being so unique. Now I find out both his first and middle name honored your relative. I would love to come to the reunion sometime - I doubt I could make it this year. I appreciate the gallia genealogy website. I found information on my line on it. Thanks David -------Original Message------- From: Henny Evans Date: 6/11/2008 9:01:39 AM To: ohgallia@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA] John Fletcher Cherrington Interestingly, my ancestor was Pennel Cherrington!! As I told you earlier, William came here in 1805 with a huge family. All of his children except the one who died an infant came to Gallia County. The men who married Switzers were from William's first wife Margaret. I come from his second wife, Letitia, through Pennel Cherrington. So, William and Clement, sons of William, were half-brothers to Pennel. Pennel lived until 1885 and he was one of the oldest siblings here then. In fact, other than a sister who died here in 1887, he was the oldest son left and I think was considered by many in the family as the remaining head of the family. My children are the eighth generation to live in Gallia County. But....there were 143 grandchildren of William so there were still many, many Cherringtons here. Although the name itself had died out in the county there are hundreds of descendants still here. Our son has the middle name Cherrington and others use it in a variety of ways. We have a reunion in July and we'd love to have you come. You can check out details on galliagenealogy.org. If I can help you with your research in any way, please do not hesitate to ask. Henny David Stewart wrote: Hi Henny I see you must have a pretty good link into the Cherrington line. How do you tie in? I have just recently got into family history. My dad changed his last name from Switzer to Stewart (his step-father). My grandfather Harry Switzer brother was Pennel Cherrington Switzer. That tells me that the Switzers and Cherringtons must have kept in close contact over the generations. Of course that would not be unexpected as they were in Gallia county all that time. My grandfather moved to Tacoma Washington and I believe Pennel did too. I am going to suggest that familysearch have a way to note that a couple had no children. That way someone researching would not wonder if they had kids Thanks all who contribute to this message system! He married Katie Miles. No children. I am not certain where he went but for some reason I think west to Kansas or Missouri, but I am absolutley not certain about that. He had a brother Joseph and a sister Francis who married a Denney. Actually there were 12 children in his family but not all grew to adulthood. Several of his brothers went to the state of Washington. The Cherrington family came to Gallia County in 1805. William had 16 children by two wives. After Margaret Hank died, he married Letitia McClung a widow with 5 children. Of his 16 all but one grew to adulthood. William and Clement are the two who married Switzers and they had a brother John who was the grandfather of John Fletcher. Okay, thanks. Do you know if Ajesta was ever married to John Fletcher Cherrington? It looks as if Ajesta divorced Charles E. Boice. His third marriage was to Flora Ellen Rumfield (John) Taylor and that ended in divorce too. His first marriage was to Ella C. Thaxton and she died. Also, I recently made a trip to the historical society for a copy of Elizabeth Darst Rife's will. Most researchers list Elizabeth's (Betsy's) place of death as Domino, Meigs County, OH. Her will, and newspaper articles, show Domino as being near Bulaville, Addison Twp., Gallia County, OH. At the time of her death, Nathan was postmaster for Domino. I understnd the problem this person is having finding a birth record.? My mother, Bessie Blanche Perry was sUpposedly born in Gallia County on 20 May 1919 and was a twin.? This is 89 years later and still no proof of death in so far as a birth certificate is concerned.? Only a few records here and there and some of them are totally different.? Good luck. -----Original Message----- From: Henny Evans <hcevans1775@sbcglobal.net> To: ohgallia@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, 11 Jun 2008 9:33 am Subject: Re: [OHGALLIA] birth records 1894-1903 These came straight from the originals. Just a thought regarding the birth records. I stopped at the health department in Jennings Co., IN to look up birth records of my husband's family. They were listed in a big book. Several names were blacked out with tape. When I asked about this I was told that those were babies given up for adoption and the birth mother info could not be given out. We never found the record of my husband's youngest aunt, and still don't know the story of her birth. So, perhaps the birth you are looking for was an adoption. Dorothy
Well that confirms we are very distant related. Hi I looked him up on familysearch.org and it has his spouse & death dates but no children. Also his birth is listed as 26 Feb 1860 in Gallia or possibly 26 Sep 1860 in VA Death 28 Nov 1912 Married to Katie Miles 1886 in Gallia - no birth dates etc for Katie. I have 2 Switzer cousins that married Cherringtons but will have to do more research to see if tied in with this Cherrington. Hi Beth: Not necessarily. Most of the ones I have seen on these batch numbers are extracted records. They usually say..... Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date. If you have not tried this, you may be able to find births using the FamilySearch.org database if the birth has been submitted or extracted. On the FamilySearch main screen choose advance search, then IGI. Fill in the first and last name of the father and first name of the mother. Select North America as the region and United States as the country. State is not necessary but could narrow down duplicate names. This is not a guarantee that you will find anything or if submitted that it will be correct. But certainly worth a chance for potential leads.
