Hello Beth, Related to the familysearch.org site, they are undergoing some changes and that may account for the problems you found. I recently called on some library staff for business and they are in the throes of digitizing books and microfilm along with a new search engine so that eventually when we enter a term you will get everything they have: census records, IGI, etc. Pass along a comment if you get a chance, they may not be aware of the inconsistencies getting out to us. Also, it's people who make our website grow daily...whether it's a photo or an obit or a cemetery addition. We really, really appreciate that. If everyone would look through their folders, I'm sure they'd find an obit or two to contribute. Whenever I look for an obit, I always gather five or ten others at the same time and then type them up as time allows. Sometimes when I'm at Mound Hill Cemetery, I'll drive around and spot more new graves and copy those as well. We update monthly from newspaper obits. We've updated several fairly large cemeteries but with 500 in Gallia County, we are always happy to have help. To get things on the website, it takes people who are willing to type items. We've got a couple of major projects in the works but we don't want to mention them until we're closer to getting them on. That way people won t be asking "Is it done yet?" We work as quickly as time permits. We really, really want to help everyone and as we celebrate 25 years as an OGS Chapter this year, we have planned significant events. One for everyone right now is the 25% per cent off sale on 25 items for our 25th year. We are an all volunteer facility but we have rent, utilities, insurance and many other expenses so the sale of books, memberships and donations help keep us afloat. Yes, it even costs to maintain a website. We wish we could give everything away but then we would not be able to exist as a group where you can come and visit. Everything we do to help you is done strictly by donation of our own time. And the gals that man our office are terrific at helping others. There's never a dull day at 57 Court Street where we are open Wed. thru Fri. So far in the last few weeks with researchers out and about, we've opened 5 or 6 more times on weekends or weekdays. We advertise that we will and we do it. But remember that these volunteers give freely and willingly to help you. Same way with the webite...it is by the help of many that it is what it is. We have one terrific webmaster, again a volunteer. And this list, again it's a donation to all of us from Marty Cassidy. So, yes, in the spirit of helping others, let's all do what we can. There's going to help me with all the Ohio railroads though. They said it's tricky because the railroad retirement board only has from 1936 on and you have to pay about $30.00 to order those. I'm looking at the 1880's. Apparently the railroad in Southern Ohio has a rich history because it was also the subject of "invasions" by the South into Ohio during the Civil War. The Ohio Archives has a whole list of how the Civil War soldiers invaded the trains. It's pretty interesting [I think anyway]. I will add you to the list, if you get the Historical Society's newsletter the Glade then you would have read an article my son-in-law wrote about his experience this year as a t-ball coach. It is very good. We are just starting the t-ball thing again and with 4 grandsons I'm sure we will be doing it for a few more years to come. Well, now I'm off the work. If you enjoyed the information about the Chesse kittens, I have other informational items in my collection. If you get the Historical Society's newsletter the Glade then you would have seen two articles I submitted about the Education in Gallia County. These were from a thesis written by a great-great-aunt who taught at Huntington East High School in Huntington, WV. Unfortunately, the series will not be continued because there were some at the Historical Society that felt they could not print an original paper without changes which was done without my permission. I felt if it could not be printed as she wrote it then it should not have been printed at all. I have considered having my son-in-law set up a website for me to post all the historical items that I have so others could enjoy them. While sorting through boxes I have found some very interesting items that is between things I have and things my mother-in-law had. As I get things organized I will try to put pieces of information on the web list and if anyone would like to read more then I can send it to you personally. Currently, I am working on transcribing my Great-grandmother Emma "Grandma" Gatewood's diaries of her hiking the Appalachian and Oregon trails. This is a long process as they are very small notebooks and have to be blown up on the computer so I can read them. I have already transcribe another family members diary with many dates of births, deaths and marriages. I found a typing error in the third paragraph, it should say "One is showing a sleeping kitten" Sorry, spell check didn't think it was misspelled because keen is a word. Marjorie
While reading about the Railroad information I thought about a set of drawings that I have hanging in my front hall. It is a set of three reproductions of a copper-plate etchings by Guido Gruenewal. (a well-known Viennese artist of the 1920's & 30's) They are three drawings of Chessie cat, her kittens and her "Old Man" Peake. There is also a story of Chessie and Chessie as a Kitten. My husband got these from his grandmother years ago but they were never out of the envelop until I had them matted and framed. They are very lovely drawings of the cats and the story is very interesting. My husband's grandfather ran Keener Sand & Clay in Gallia County and they used the Chessie System to ship the sand & clay to other parts of the state so he was always getting items from the company. I just wish we had some of the old calendars. It tells about how Guido was fascinated by cats and kittens and by using the difficult technique of copper-plate etching, he produce many prints of his family's pets in amusing poses and delicate colors. One is showing a sleepy keen in bed which was seen in 1933 by an officer of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. At that time, the C&O was trying to advertise the comfort of its new air-conditioned sleeping cars. An advertisement in the September issue of "Fortune" magazine that year (1933) had the etching with the slogan "Sleep like a Kitten" The following year the kitten known as "Chessie" appeared in the first of a continuous series of Chessie Calendars. The three etching in the collection I have is the 1933 Chessie kitten sleeping, Chessie and her kittens and Peake "Chessie's Old Man. There is more about how she became as famous as a movie star with people sending her gifts and asking for her photo and how people would send birthday cards to her every September 1. In a paragraph about the railroad it says that the Chesapeake and Ohio is now affiliated wit the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. In 1972, the partners adopted "Chessie System" as a new short-form name. This is an interesting piece about the railroad and cats but it is to long to put on the list so I just give you some of the highlights. It also tell about the painter Guido Gruenewald. Marjorie
Margorie, Growing up, I remember my great-aunt always having a Chessie calendar in her kitchen... she loved cats. In my 20's, I started doing needle work and stitched a "sleeping Chessie" for her for Christmas. Ten years ago, I adopted two kittens, a brother and sister. The male was easy to name.... Simon, but the little female went through several names. After a couple of days, and a close look at her sleeping, I remembered the "sleeping Chessie" and she became Miss Chesapeake, shortened to Miss Chessie. I have seen pictures of Chessie and her kittens, but had never heard of "Peake". Could you take pictures of your etchings and email them? Would love to hear the whole story. --- On Tue, 6/17/08, Marjorie L. Wood <mlwood@eurekanet.com> wrote: > From: Marjorie L. Hi Beth, Did you get my email about this marriage list? I agree with those who are urging you to donate it to the Brossard Public Library. Have you sent it to those who requested a copy? If so - it seems that I did not receive it. Thanks Folks for the additional input on the Railroad mergers. I was only aware of the roll played by conrail, probably forgot the rest of it because it did not directly affect me. My husband went to work for Penn Central in the early sixties and was inlvolved in those changes which affected Penn Central. That was a lot of good information worth saving for future reference. Regina Charlie Hazlett <charlie@hazlett.net> wrote: This is also true, but there were other railroads involved in the creation of CSX. B&O and C&O, became the Chessie, I think. (Chessie might have just been a nickname). Then others were purchased by Chessie and those became CSX. Half of Conrail was the latest major component of CSX. Hey Beth, don't trash it! Send it to the Bossard (sp?) Library. Someone years from now who has just started their own personal search will thank you. Pretty sure the Gallia Genealogical Society, OGS and the Historical Society have full marriage lists, but you could make a copy and give them each one as well. NEVER pitch info like that, donate! -------------- Original message -------------- From: Beth Haney <bhaney@speakeasy.net> > Several people have already asked me to send the list of marriages for > people with the Scott surname married in Gallia County 1803 - 1900. > I'll be trashing it soon, unless anybody else asks for it. > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > OHGALLIA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in > the subject and the body of the message

I saw one which obviously was just misread and wrote them about it. They basically said to hold on to corrections...until when? I don't know. Henny
Several people have already asked me to send the list of marriages for people with the Scott surname married in Gallia County 1803 - 1900. I'll be trashing it soon, unless anybody else asks for it.
The following 2 obituaries and 1 marriage was mentioned in the "Gallipolis Bulletin, on Friday, March 21, 1902: "MARRIAGE OF MISS MCELHENEY. Miss Carrie McElheney, of this city, was married to Mr. Reaves, of Portsmouth, March 8, 1902. They are now here on a visit to Mrs. Reaves, parents, on First Avenue. Mrs. Reaves, parents, on First Avenue. Mrs. Reaves is a most estimable young lady and the groom is said to be a fine young man." "JACOB SHULER. Jacob Shuler died at his home near Durgan Tuesday and was buried Thursday. He left a wife and one child. Miss Maggie Shuler, a niece, went out Thursday to attend the funeral. Deceased was a fine old gentleman, respected by all who knew him." "PETER WALKER. Mr. Peter Walker died at his home on the river road, near Walker's, last Saturday, aged 55 years, leaving a wife and five children. The funeral services were conducted Monday morning by Rev. Jehu Rose. Interment at Mound Hill by Wetherholt." Teresa Herrmann Columbus, Ohio
The following article was printed in the "Gallia Times" newspaper, Wednesday August 26, 1914, Gallipolis, Ohio: "SKELETON MAN Was Found Sunday in Addison Township Woods. A gruesome find was made in the woods on Thomas REES's farm in Addison Township near the Cheshire line Sunday morning by one of Mr. Rees' boys and another young man named Harry VIARS. They had been attending Sunday school, and returning took a short cut through the woods. They stumbled upon the skeleton of a man, lying face downward in a little gully. The boys hurriedly summoned others, and word was sent to Coroner Clary at Gallipolis, who immediately went to the scene and began an investigation. It was suspected that the body was that of a patient at the Epileptic Hospital, and an investigation of the records there proved the suspicion to be correct. The body was that of Frank SCHUSTER, who had wandered away from the institution about May 20. At the time of his disappearance he was traced into the Addison neighborhood, but he could not be found. The remains were found in a gully by the side of a path, where the unfortunate man had apparently been seized with an attack of his malady and died. The skeleton was removed to Gallipolis where interment was made on Monday."
